Iran's Rosetta Stone: Behistun Rock!
This impressive cliff carving, known as Behistun Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Iran.
Created by King Darius the Great in the 5th century BC, it's inscribed in three languages - a key that helped unlock the mysteries of cuneiform script, similar to the Rosetta Stone for Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Imagine a giant rock face telling a story in multiple languages! This inscription offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient history.

3000 years ago, in what is now Iran, a type of underground aqueduct called a qanat was engineered to transport water over long distances to farms and villages that couldn’t exist without it in the hot dry climates.
The holes supplied oxygen to workers who dug the aqueduct by hand over many miles.

The Cyrus Cylinder - World's first Charter of Human Rights
The Cyrus Cylinder is an ancient clay artifact, inscribed with a declaration from Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great after his conquest of Babylon (modern day Iraq) in 539 BCE. It is written in Akkadian cuneiform script. It was created and used as a foundation deposit following the Persian conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, when the Neo-Babylonian Empire was invaded by Cyrus and incorporated into his Persian Empire.

The Cyrus Cylinder is considered the world's first Charter of Human Rights, promoting religious tolerance and freedom, exemplifying Cyrus's innovative governance and respect for diverse cultures.

The text on the Cylinder praises Cyrus, sets out his genealogy and portrays him as a king from a line of kings. The Babylonian king Nabonidus, who was defeated and deposed by Cyrus, is denounced as an impious oppressor of the people of Babylonia and his low-born origins are implicitly contrasted to Cyrus' kingly heritage. The victorious Cyrus is portrayed as having been chosen by the chief Babylonian god Marduk to restore peace and order to the Babylonians.

The Cylinder's text has traditionally been seen by biblical scholars as corroborative evidence of Cyrus as a benefactor of the citizens of Babylonia and his policy of repatriation of the Jewish people following their Babylonian captivity (an act that the Book of Ezra attributes to Cyrus), and restoration of temples and cult sanctuaries across Mesopotamia and elsewhere in the region.

The Citadel of Bam, located in Bam, Iran, is one of the most impressive examples of ancient Persian architecture. Built mainly between the 7th and 11th centuries, it occupies approximately 180,000 square meters and is famous for its adobe construction, which has allowed it to stand the test of time. The citadel's fortifications include imposing walls, ancient towers and a complex system of underground tunnels. Despite suffering significant damage from an earthquake in 2003, efforts are underway to restore and preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site, which is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of ancient Persian engineering...

In 2015, a routine construction project in Borujerd, Iran, led to the unexpected discovery of an ancient aqueduct system hidden beneath the remnants of a historic castle. This sophisticated network of clay pipes and pottery vessels showcased a remarkably advanced understanding of water management. The system is believed to date back to the Sassanian period (224-651 AD), though some experts suggest it could be even older. The materials and techniques used in the aqueduct indicate a high level of engineering skill, challenging our perceptions of ancient technology.

This significant find, with its advanced design for water purification and distribution, suggests a civilization with exceptional technical abilities. Ongoing research aims to uncover the precise origins of the aqueduct, adding to the intrigue and raising questions about the people who built it and what other secrets might lie beneath the surface.
