Today, our crew engaged in a flavorful journey as we took a cooking lesson at a local tavern, a short drive away from our village.
The day kicked off with a short introduction to the specificities of Crete, including what makes its cuisine stand out from the traditional Greek dishes.
And then the proper fun began - we made some cheese from scratch, using the fresh milk from the owner’s goats! We took turns stirring, added a few ingredients in the end (vinegar, salt and a hint of sugar), and voilà - some yummy cheese for everyone to enjoy!
We also made three other dishes: the famous tzatziki (a variant with carrots in it), 'ntakos' (some dry and crunchy bread with tomatoes and crumbled feta on it) and 'strapatsada' (a kind of omelet with little tomatoes).
It was a lot of fun, of course. But we also learned a few things about how local people live and eat, how they used to back in the days, and how Crete is somewhat different from mainland Greece.
The best part of this day was the interactions it provided for all with two wonderful ladies - Stella, the tavern's owner and mother of 5, who generously organized this lesson for us and was very patient and a great teacher.
And Irene, a lovely woman from the village we are based in, who helped us arrange this and provided lots of extra information about life in the area.
Thank you so much to the two of you (and to our wonderful teacher Becca, for coordinating this day) for this very successful outing!
