2025. Letâs do this. #HappyNewYear
This evening, I had the privilege of attending Shiloh Baptist Churchâs 85th annual performance of excerpts from Handelâs Messiah in Washington, D.C. Held every first Sunday in December, this long-standing tradition filled the sanctuary with the beautiful sounds of Shilohâs Senior Choir, guest artists, and an orchestra under the direction of Dr. Thomas D. Tyler.
This yearâs concert was especially significant as it celebrated Shilohâs 150th anniversary and honored Reverend Dr. Wallace Charles Smith, the churchâs esteemed pastor of 33 years, who will retire at the end of 2024. Adding to the occasion, the church was gifted a signed Steinway grand piano by the Steinway Company, a generous gesture that underscores Shilohâs prominence in Washington, D.C.âs cultural and musical history. #blackculturedc #111placesdc #shilohbaptistdc
The sanctuary was decorated with poinsettias and wreaths, creating a warm and festive atmosphere for the full house of attendees. Shilohâs Messiah performance, free and open to the public, is a testament to the churchâs commitment to community and culture.
Shiloh Baptist Church was founded during the Civil War by 21 freedom seekers who fled Fredericksburg, Virginia, with the help of the Union Army. Over the past 150 years, it has become a nationally and internationally renowned institution, known for its leadership in faith, culture, and justice.
Shiloh is also featured in 111 Places in Black Culture in Washington, D.C., That You Must Not Miss, highlighting its rich history and enduring contributions to the city.

It is always a special pleasure to visit with Virginia Ali, who founded Benâs Chili Bowl with her husband 66 years ago in 1958. She manifests love and light. I was invited to visit with her earlier this week to present her with her autographed copy of 111 Places in Black Culture in Washington DC That You Must Not Miss. She told me that she loves to read and looks forward to reading the book. My 15 minute visit turned into three hours, chatting with her, her family, and some of the regulars in the restaurant. She is such a kind and amazing lady! đ #blackculturedc #only1dc #washingtondc #benschilibowl
