the oldest part of the property & site of the original mill building c.1750
the deck that faces the courtyard is a great space for a group of friends to bbq & share a meal together
while the grassy island by the mill stream & waterfalls is an ideal spot for a picnic.

Having grown up in this old mill, watching my parents transform it around me, creating an unconventional home, I have such an attachment to the property.
I was incredibly lucky to grow up with the view and sounds of a waterfall outside my bedroom window.

I am so happy to share the mill with like minded people who enjoy the rich history or the property, the design & repurposing of the structure itself, in a beautiful natural setting.

happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads.
here’s a photo of my very own Don Salvato.
an incredibly talented & ambitious visionary who took many risks (including standing on the top of ladders, shown here circa 1966)
while in the initial renovation phase of what would become .
he transformed an abandoned historic mill in to our family home, all while working a full time corporate architectural job, & creating a full body of artwork+inventions.
Though I always miss him,
I feel honored to preserve his life’s work & am happy to share the mill with architecture, design, history & nature enthusiasts and all who appreciate it.

I’m so pleased to have found the perfect solution for the overflow of my father’s extensive archive of architectural blueprints. when my friend asked if she could wallpaper her hallway in her London home with my father’s blueprints I filled up a suitcase with them on my recent visit. I’m so touched to have my father’s work ‘live’ in the home of my extended family & I know he would be (is) too. This is still a work in progress but it’s so exciting to see it all coming together!

on the ground floor of the original James Leffel & Co. turbine (circa 1910) can be found.
at one point in the mid 1970s after an engineer came to study the mill’s potential for hydroelectric power, the turbine magically started up when my mom & I were home alone! we called upon our family friend Peter Wing (the creator of the magical ) who jammed the wooden beam in the turbine wheel to stop it from running. later on the sluiceway was boarded up, to keep the water from flowing in, as it still is today, until one day I might be able to fully embrace the mill’s hydropower capabilities….a family dream I continue to explore…..

the stone work that is
dates back to the turn of the century (with the outside courtyard walls from the mid 1700s)
the current mild winter temperatures are bringing out the moss & the lichen which usually happens in the spring creating beautiful layers of texture. I’m still so inspired when I take a moment to appreciate this, even after all these years…..

so grateful to have such a talented to help preserve & maintain the structure

as the daughter of an architect i inherited all of my father’s architectural drawings. i recently dug back in to his archive & again found myself in awe & appreciation of his many talents. he designed lots of hospitals & prisons aside from private homes….when he wasn’t lost in the endless process of renovating he worked for architectural firms Edward Durrell Stone (the firm that designed the Museum of Modern Art) and Perkins&Will to name a few.
he also designed a section of the Hospital for Special Surgeries that i pass by weekly on the FDR drive as i go in/out of the city for work. my heart flutters every time I pass by.
