Caye Caulker is a small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize. It’s divided by a narrow channel called the Split, where there’s a bar and a sandy beach. To the south is the island’s only settlement, known as Caye Caulker Village. The north of the island is home to dense mangrove forest and diverse birdlife, protected by a forest reserve. The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve has dive sites on the Belize Barrier Reef.

Altun Ha
Altun Ha (9am-5pm daily, US$5) is 34 miles north of Belize City and has become one of the more popular day trips for groups and individuals venturing from Belize City, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker; it is the most visited Mayan ruins in Belize. A Mayan trading center as well as a religious ceremonial site, it is believed to have accommodated about 10,000 people. Archaeologists, working amid a Mayan community that has been living here for several centuries, have dated construction to about 1,500-2,000 years ago. It wasn’t until the archaeologists arrived in 1964 that the old name, Rockstone Pond, was translated into the Mayan words “Altun Ha.”

To reach Altun Ha from the Philip Goldson Highway, continue past the Burrell Boom turnoff (to the Community Baboon Sanctuary) and continue to about Mile 19, where the road forks; the right fork is the Old Northern Highway, which leads to Altun Ha and Maskall Village. The entrance is 10.5 miles from the intersection. The road is in horrible condition and is not getting any better with the increased traffic.

Altun Ha is close enough to Belize City that a taxi ride is your best bet (US$100 round-trip). Kenneth Bennett of KB Taxi Service (tel. 501/634-2865) is an excellent driver who will wait for up to 2.5 hours while you tour the site. You can also opt for a tour operator that specializes in these trips, such as JAF TRAVEL 1.786.242.7222 or [email protected]

BELIZE COFFEE BEANS

The country of Belize is a central American country located between the Mexican to the North and Guatemala to the West and South, and the beautiful Caribbean Sea to the East.

Belize coffee is cultivated organically under the rainforest canopy at the Gullon Jug Estate on the high plateaus of western Belize. The estate is 130,000 acres in all including cattle, corn, orchards, wild game and a tourist resort.

The fertile soils and subtropical, temperate climate provide ideal conditions for growing fine Arabica coffee. The forests of the region were once covered with the prized mahogany trees that were felled to panel the walls of aristocrats in England.

Today the forests of Belize provide shade for Arabica coffee plants, which allows the coffee trees to mature slower, delivering more nutrients to the coffee beans and developing more robust flavors.

Scuba Diving – San Pedro, Ambergris Caye
Known for Our Blue Hole Expeditions

The Blue Hole in Belize was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world. This is a popular spot among recreational scuba divers who are lured by the opportunity to dive into crystal-clear water and to meet several species of fish, including Midnight Parrotfish, Caribbean reef sharks, and other juvenile species. Other kinds of sharks, such as the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regularly sighted. Usually, day trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips from the coastal tourist communities in Belize.

In 2012 Discovery Channel ranked the Great Blue Hole as number one on its list of “The 10 Most Amazing Places on Earth.”

We have 12 boats ranging from 17-foot to 20-foot skiffs to our 52-footer, Papa Changa, and most favored our Blue Hole flagship, the 62-footer “Papa Tomas,” the most comfortable and suitable Blue Hole Dive Vessel in Belize.
