INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN DICK GAUGHAN RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS
Scottish singer/songwriter Dick Gaughan will return to Erris to perform his first live concert in Doohoma, the homeland of his late father, on Wednesday the 8th of October next. Dick says he is very much looking forward to performing in Doohoma, where he has a number of close relations. The internationally acclaimed singer songwriter, a native of Leith in Scotland, has performed on the highest stages worldwide, and is recognized among his peers and fans as one of the most talented Folk musicians in existence. According to music critic Alistair Clarke;-
'Dick Gaughan is one of those musicians that simply must be heard perform live.
The passion that he has, and that clearly shows in his music, has not dulled one iota in his last four decades of performing'.
Gaughan was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels, both Scots and Irish, which naturally, therefore, provide the foundation for everything he does.He has been a professional musician and singer since Jan 1970. Has been playing guitar since the age of 7 and made his first solo album in 1971. Working mainly in the areas now known as "Folk" or "Celtic" music, he has recorded quite extensively since then in many countries and in various combinations. Has also worked extensively as a session musician in a wide variety of musical styles.
During this time he has also been fairly active as a record producer/engineer, midi programmer, composer and orchestrator - composing music for films for the BBC, Scottish Arts Council and independent producers as well as a full symphony ("Treaty 300") and a 12-part suite for orchestra ("Timewaves") - actor and theatre music director, having been in both roles with the celebrated 7:84 (Scotland) Theatre Company in the early 80s, songwriter whose songs have been recorded by, among many others, Billy Bragg, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Roy Bailey and Capercaillie
'You go home from a Dick Gaughan session feeling exhilarated, not just at the wonderful skills of the most potent singer ever to emerge from the Scottish folk-music revival, not just at the astonishingly fluent and explosively eloquent guitar playing, but by the sense of the stark exposition of wrong and the tremulously argued legitimacy of right. Even those who disagree profoundly with his view of life recognize the conviction and the supreme artistry.'....Alastair Clarke
Gaughan has been the subject of three full television documentaries in the UK - BBC2 Spectrum (1982), Scottish Television NB (1989) and BBC4 Session (2006) - as well as many radio documentaries in several countries. The well known song 'Song for Ireland' which formed part of the Spectrum documentary was filmed on Doohoma beach in 1982 and may be viewed on You Tube.
