Many visitors to Milan’s Duomo head straight for the rooftop views—and for good reason, they’re stunning. But to truly appreciate this iconic cathedral, it’s worth spending time exploring the inside, too. One statue that stands out is that of Saint Bartholomew Flayed. True to its name, it depicts Saint Bartholomew holding his own skin, draped over his shoulders like a cloak.

It’s a piece that sparks reflection on resilience, faith, and the artistry of the Renaissance. Next time you visit the Duomo, take a moment to admire it.

5 facts about this powerful statue:

1. It was crafted by Italian sculptor Marco d'Agrate in 1562. It is one of his most famous works.

2. As it goes, Bartholomew was flayed alive before being beheaded. The sculpture’s dramatic realism and anatomical detail make it a powerful representation of his horrific fate.

3. The statue is known for its extraordinary anatomical accuracy, showcasing Bartholomew’s exposed muscles, veins, and sinews in a way that was quite advanced for its time.

4. On the base of the statue, Marco d'Agrate left an inscription saying, "I was not sculpted by Praxiteles but by Marco d'Agrate," which is a proud assertion of his artistic prowess and a nod to classical Greek art.

5. Despite the intense and disturbing imagery, the statue's serene expression on Saint Bartholomew’s face is seen as a symbol of faith and resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering. It’s quite a powerful meditation on martyrdom and the strength of the human spirit.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, picking the perfect spot to eat in NYC can be a little daunting! And during the holidays, when schedules are tight, having a few top-notch spots in mind makes all the difference.

To help cut through the chaos, we (along with Devour Tours) hosted our third live Q&A session, this time all about NYC. Joining us were NYC gurus Nomadic Matt, Courtney Christine, Nikki Padilla, and Stephen Oddo, ready to dish out their insider tips on experiencing the city during the festive season (though these nuggets of wisdom are worth bookmarking for any time of year).

Naturally, the conversation turned to one of NYC’s most iconic topics: the restaurant scene.

Here’s a roundup of Matt’s top recommendations (save this list—it’ll come in handy!):

1. Yuka 📍 1557 2nd Ave
2. NR 📍 339 E 75th St.
3. Flex Mussels 📍 1431 3rd Ave
4. Tha Phraya 📍1553 2nd Ave
5. Rolf's 📍 281 3rd Ave
6. Gramercy Tavern 📍 42 E 20th St.
7. The Bao 📍 13 St Marks Place

What’s your go-to NYC restaurant to recommend to visitors (especially during the holidays)? Drop your favorites in the comments. 🍽️

If you’re an art lover in Paris, there’s something at the Musée d'Orsay you’ve got to see. Elmgreen & Dragset, known for shaking things up, have literally turned the museum upside down with their new exhibition, L’Addition.

Their sculptures—like boys with VR headsets, drones, or even sitting on a washing machine—are suspended from the ceiling, making it feel like the whole space has flipped.

These modern works are placed right alongside the museum’s historic sculptures, creating a really cool mix of old and new that makes you stop and think.

If you’re on our Musée d’Orsay tour anytime between now and February 2025, your guide will make sure you don’t miss this!

Paris is one of the biggest cities in Europe, and there’s SO much to see and do. Beyond the obvious must-sees like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, here are 5 other places that are well worth a visit:

1 🔹 Sainte-Chapelle: Sainte-Chapelle has 15 towering stained-glass windows depicting over 1,000 scenes from the Bible, making it one of the most stunning examples of Gothic architecture in the world.

2 🔹 Musée d’Orsay: The Musée d’Orsay was transformed into a museum in the 1980s and now houses the world’s largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. Discover works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and more, all in a building that’s a piece of history itself.

3 🔹 Montmartre Museum & Vineyard: This neighborhood once hosted artists like Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec. The local museum preserves this bohemian past, while the nearby vineyard, the last of its kind in Paris, offers a rare look at the city’s wine-making heritage.

4 🔹 Giverny & Monet’s House: Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny are where he painted his iconic water lilies. Here you can walk through his flower gardens (and house) to see where Impressionism was born in nature.

5 🔹 Trocadéro Gardens: These gardens offer fantastic views of the Eiffel Tower, but there’s history here too. Built for the 1937 World’s Fair, the gardens and fountains symbolize Franco-German cooperation and offer insight into Parisian urban design.

Our Paris tours cover each of these destinations, allowing you to dive deep into their history and stories with expert local guides.

If you’re traveling this time of year, you might be drawn to the spookier side of the cities you’re visiting. In the Halloween spirit, let’s take a closer look at the catacombs and crypts in two cities: Rome and Paris.

☠️ Rome Catacombs: Rome’s catacombs served as burial sites for early Christians and Jews dating back to the 2nd century. Unlike in Paris, these tunnels contain full tombs rather than stacks of bones, and they even served as places of worship during times of persecution. If you visit today can see ancient frescoes and inscriptions that shed light on early Christian life.

☠️ Paris Catacombs: On the other hand, Paris’ catacombs weren’t created until many, many (1,500) years later. The famed ossuary was created in the 18th century to address the city’s overflowing cemeteries. These tunnels, originally limestone quarries, house the remains of over six million Parisians. They were carefully arranged in haunting displays, and offer a unique perspective on the city’s history.

Our tours in both Rome and Paris offer a rare chance to explore these fascinating underground sites and the stories they hold.

Have you ever visited catacombs in Rome or Paris?

Happy Halloween!

Did you know the statue of David was originally intended for the facade of Florence’s Cathedral? Instead, due to its extraordinary beauty, it was placed at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio.

This new location transformed David into a powerful symbol of the Florentine Republic’s strength and independence, standing proudly in front of the town hall.

In 1873, the original statue was moved to the Accademia Gallery for preservation, and today, a replica stands in Piazza della Signoria in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. David has since become an emblem of Florence itself—you’ll find replicas of all sizes throughout the city. But nothing compares to seeing the real masterpiece up close at the Accademia Gallery!

When you think of Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí inevitably comes to mind. His nature-inspired designs have shaped the city, from the iconic Sagrada Família to the whimsical Park Güell. Here are some key facts to understand his work and impact:

1🔸 He almost quit architecture: Early in his career, Gaudí was disillusioned and considered giving up. A major commission from Barcelona's elite reignited his passion and launched his career.

2🔸 Eusebi Güell funded his career: Gaudí’s most important patron, Eusebi Güell, funded many of his famous projects, including Park Güell, Palau Güell, and Colònia Güell. Their partnership transformed Barcelona.

3🔸 Master of ergonomics: Gaudí designed furniture with the human form in mind, blending beauty and comfort. Pieces like the chairs in Casa Batlló are perfect examples.

4🔸 Inspired by nature’s geometry: Gaudí believed nature was the best architect. He used organic shapes from plants, animals, and mountains in his designs, like the flowing lines of Casa Milà and the intricate details of the Sagrada Família.

5🔸 Sagrada Família’s amazing details: Still under construction after over 140 years, it stands at 560 feet tall (170 meters) and features over 100 plants and animals carved into its exterior.

Gaudí’s visionary work transformed Barcelona into an architectural wonderland.
