I recently had the opportunity to cross the River Ubangui in C.A.R and spend the day in Zongo, Democratic Republic of Congo. It was an incredible experience and totally unexpected. I was originally planning to visit Kinshasa on this trip but due to flight cancellations It was looking impossible to visit DRC. My host in C.A.R took me to Zongo where I met the Head of the DGM in that region. We chatted for about an hour and he was happy I came to visit. He arranged for a local gentleman to take me all over the village and surrounding beaches. He also told me If I ever wanted to come back and take a barge down the Ubangui leading to the Congo River and eventually Kinshasa, he would help me arrange that.
I have read many detailed reports of negative experiences from travelers who are questioned by the DGM but I’m happy to share a positive experience.
