For some, thoughts of a Travel and Table blog are associated with roaring jets, foreign soil or exotic food. Let’s face it, not all of us will go skiing in the Swiss Alps, dine at a five star restaurant weekly or create their own recipe for chocolate soufflé! While I do enjoy using my passport, I think that Travel and Table experiences can be found anywhere, locally or abroad. It’s up to us to determine that value. Just remember, more doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Deacon Brodie’s Tavern

Built in 1806 on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile, the pub is named after one of the city’s most famous sons, Deacon William Brodie – one of the inspirations behind Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde.

Born in 1741, Brodie was a deacon of a group of skilled carpenters known as the Guild of Wrights. By day, he was a respectable citizen and a member of the town council but, by night, he became involved in gambling and drinking. To pay off his debts, he had to resort to burglary and a life of crime and, by 1786, he had a small gang of criminals working in the city.

Throughout the pub, you’ll see references to Brodie and his double life, as well as our fascinating, decorative wooden ceiling.

There is no way I can adequately describe how much I enjoyed getting to see the Edinburgh Castle. Built in 1103 (not a typo!) and it is built on top of a volcanic eruption. 😳

My photos do not do justice to the magnitude of this UNESCO world heritage site.

Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier or Dandie Dinmont Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died on 14 January 1872. The story continues to be well known in Scotland, through several books and films. (Wikipedia)

Immerse yourself in the culture when you travel! I always try to do every optional events while on tour such as this Scottish dinner and entertainment.
We heard several bagpipe players but this one was excellent! And the accordion player played historical and pop music! The Scottish dancers were so entertaining too.

What makes this castle special? It’s a SCOTTISH castle and they were so detail oriented! The grounds are beautiful! From period clothing to weapons to furniture, they spared nothing in providing a true “castle experience“!

When traveling where you’ve never been, I would encourage you to take a LOCAL GUIDED TOUR!
Yes, you might have spent several hours planning, but these guides have researched and studied their towns!
When you’re walking around in a strange place, you’re usually focused on your path, the guides encourage you to look up! Our local Galway guide pointed out this family crest and gave historical facts that I most likely wouldn’t have found. And he used our tour group members to enact out the skull and crossbones monument.
Want to know the story too? Go to Galway and get a locally guided tour!

Next stop…Northern Ireland! This is Giant’s Causeway.

The Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast is a spectacular area of global geological importance on the sea coast at the edge of the Antrim plateau in Northern Ireland. The most characteristic and unique feature of the site is the exposure of some 40,000 large, regularly shaped polygonal columns of basalt in perfect horizontal sections, forming a pavement. This dramatic sight has inspired legends of giants striding over the sea to Scotland. Celebrated in the arts and in science, it has been a visitor attraction for at least 300 years and has come to be regarded as a symbol for Northern Ireland.

This relatively short stop on our tour of Ireland packs a punch! Queenstown is reportedly the last stop of the Titanic before its fateful sinking.

If your ancestors were Irish, the chances are that they left Ireland from the port of Cobh , or Queenstown as it was called before it reverted back to its original Irish name. Cobh was Ireland’s most important port of emigration and from 1815 to 1970 over 3 million people boarded here, heading for new lives in North America.

The story of mass emigration from Ireland is told in The Queenstown Story, a gripping exhibition housed in the old Victorian Railway Station, through which huge numbers of emigrants would have passed. Attracting some 100,000 visitors each year, the Queenstown Story examines the devastating effect of the Great Famine on the country, during which some 1.5 million Irish people died and a further 1.5 million fled the country between 1845 and 1851. The exhibition outlines the often dangerous 12-week sea voyage to the States and takes you through the conditions of the boats often referred to as Coffin Ships due to the appalling conditions on board, hazards at sea and high fatality rate. Learn about an ‘Irish Wake’ an emotive exhibition on the final farewell for emigrating sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, many of whom would never return to their homeland.

As with most Titanic exhibits, you’re issued a passenger’s name. My passenger was on the Lusitania and…survived!
