Part 2

5. Coping Mechanisms: Unexpected events are a part of travel. A missed train or a closed museum might be minor setbacks for some but can trigger anxiety for someone with ADHD. Travel coaches can provide coping techniques, ensuring the traveler is better equipped to handle surprises.

6. Expertise and Knowledge: Beyond ADHD-specific strategies, travel coaches offer invaluable insights about destinations, culture, and customs, enhancing the overall travel experience.

7. Empathy and Understanding: A travel coach who is well-versed in ADHD challenges can offer understanding and empathy, assuring the traveler that their concerns are valid and that they have someone to turn to.

8. Encouraging Independence: One of the objectives of travel coaching is to gradually equip travelers with skills to travel independently. Over time, an ADHD traveler can become more confident, learning to handle challenges on their own.

Conclusion: Traveling with ADHD does not have to be a daunting experience. With the assistance of a travel coach, the journey can be transformed into a rewarding adventure that caters to individual needs. By incorporating tailored strategies, recognizing the unique challenges faced by ADHD travelers, and providing tools for independence, travel coaching turns potential obstacles into enriching experiences.

PART 1

Traveling can be a thrilling experience, offering an opportunity to explore new cultures, meet different people, and indulge in diverse experiences. But for those with ADHD travel can come with unique challenges. The unfamiliar environment, potential sensory overload, and the need for organization can be overwhelming.

That's where travel coaching comes into the picture. Personalized travel coaching can be particularly valuable for ADHD travelers, creating enriching and enjoyable adventures.

1. Tailored Planning: ADHD individuals often have difficulties with executive functions, such as planning and organization. A travel coach can offer specialized advice to make the planning process smoother. This includes creating an itinerary that aligns with the traveler’s interests while ensuring there's enough downtime to prevent burnout.

2. Sensory Awareness: People with ADHD might be more sensitive to certain stimuli, be it bustling streets or overly bright lights. A travel coach can help identify and recommend destinations and activities that balance excitement with comfort.

3. Strategies for Focus: Sightseeing can become a daunting task if one gets easily distracted. Travel coaches can offer techniques to enhance focus, such as incorporating small breaks, using mindfulness exercises, or leveraging ADHD-friendly travel apps.

4. Routine and Structure: While the idea of travel is to break from routine, maintaining a semblance of structure can be grounding for ADHD travelers. Travel coaches can help establish a rhythm to the day that combines exploration with rest.

I recently spent a week in Mexico City, a place that has been on my bucket list forever.

One week before my trip my ADHD brain stalled on me BIG time. I lost all motivation to plan or even care about my trip. I almost canceled the trip and generally did not want to go.

My ADHD brain was telling me:
-That place sounds boring.
-You won’t have enough time to really take it in.
-It’s a giant city, who do you think you are to go there? You’re going to hate it.

After some journaling and meditation, I realized what my brain was really doing was:
-Telling me it was overwhelmed by last minute planning.
-Engaging in all or nothing thinking (this is classic ADHD)
-Trying to keep me safe.

But here is the truth, I want you to know…

This is totally normal. Your brain wants to keep you safe. There’s literally nothing you should have done differently here.

Look at it this way, the initial surge of trip excitement has worn off. Mentally your brain has already ‘been there, done that’ so it wants to move onto something else. We adhd-ers love new things!

You’ve probably planned and hyperfocused on this trip for months. Or maybe you ran out of time in the planning process and the pressure of planning last minute has overwhelmed you.
No wonder you feel the way you do!

Deep breath, you got this…

Here are my favorite tips to reignite the spark and get your brain back on track and excited for what’s to come.

If you need last minute planning or would like tools to expand on these tips, MESSAGE ME to discuss how I can help you with a planning/coaching session.
