My glorious 'King Pausa' was enjoyed as a nightcap this week at Riggs Washington DC in the Cherry Blossom decorated Silver Lyan was amazing to say the least. It had Belvedere Vodka, Green Coffee, Woodruff Sherry, Green Malt and a Red Olive - Savoury and Zesty - it was a favorite at the table and of the staff. I just found this article on how their menu is an adventure, the first for Mr. Lyan in the US and this bar was voted Top Cocktail Bar in a Hotel in the US 2022 -I am all in!! This shows their creativity...smoke bee larvae.....hmmmmmmm. Stop in next time in DC or better yet, let me book you in for a glorious stay in the old Riggs Bank suited up with all the iconic decor including safe deposit boxes as your mini-bar!

The 8th of March is International Women’s Day or, as it’s more commonly called in Italy, la Festa della Donna, where the importance of women is celebrated by the giving and receiving of mimosa blossom.

Historians cannot agree when and why the act of giving mimosa began, but there is documented evidence that men in Rome on March 8, 1946, gave the fragrant flowers to their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters as a sign of love and appreciation. Nowadays, women also hand the flowers to other women as a sign of solidarity. It’s not unheard of for the woman sat behind the counter of the local post office or on the supermarket checkout to be given sprigs of mimosa by female customers as an expression of respect.

Have you ever put Good Vermouth in the pan to deglaze, before adding in your clams to then steam with the lid on? I just used the NYT Linguine alla Vengole quick recipe that suggested this. Having visited with Sinisa Curavic of &Co last spring during our in Tarragona, I had ordered several bottles of their Spanish Vermouth, namely, https://vermouthpadro.com/en/padro-co-rojo-amargo-irrisistably-vivacious/, the Rojo Amargo, is open, and in the wine fridge. I have never ever tasted such an amazing broth. No photos, sorry, it was so delicious, I couldn't help myself. Try it! The recipe suggested to use French, but why not? Also, a great article, on Spanish Vermouth was in The New Yorker recently: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-food-scene/we-should-all-be-drinking-spanish-vermouth and it certainly rings all true, from my visit in Tarragona! Drinking Canadian wines that I brought back last summer! You must visit and taste Reif Winery's incredible Chenin Blanc 2021 and their oakless Chardonnay Reserve 2021. Not usually a fan, and I have to say, the location, tasting room, and pricepoint doesn't even come close to the extravagant palette. So happy to have my 'case' here and to plan visits to the Canadian Wine Regions. Okanogan Valley last year (2022), and this summer Niagara Region (2023)...next on my list is the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Breaking News! The Charlottesville area has just been named Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast!

We were the only North America nominee for this award and were up against tough competition, beating out destinations in France, Italy, Australia and South Africa.

This incredible recognition highlights the growth of our wine region, the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), in recent years. In forty years, our region has grown from just a handful of wineries to more than forty along the Monticello Wine Trail. Albemarle County is now the top producer of grapes by acreage for all of Virginia!

Italy has the most significant number of World Heritage Sites in the world. So, yes, you guessed right: we will dedicate our next series to the current 58 sites —53 cultural and 5 natural— and to the 14 traditions — some particular to Italy and some shared with other countries—that are on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

Did you know that 31 other Italian sites are under consideration in the so-called Tentative List?

Today we will start with the amazing Reggia di Caserta, the Royal Palace and Park, north of Naples, designed according to the wishes of Charles of Bourbon III by Luigi Vanvitelli, one of the greatest Italian architects of the 18th century.

One of the last great European gardens, the Reggia and its Park are considered a triumph of Italian Baroque, ahead of their time.
