Bear Lake Activities

The Bear Lake valley and its surrounding mountain ranges have over 350 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and wide open play areas with no crowds and no fences! There are many connecting groomed trails that take you by spectacular wonders.

You may discover a cascading winter waterfall or follow an almost-frozen stream. You may even catch a glimpse of a wintering elk or moose! Off the groomed trails, you can seemingly drive forever in wide opens places or climb the mountains for a spectacular view of turquoise Bear Lake and the surrounding hillsides. The snowmobile season starts in late November and extends into April. The variety of terrain and spectacular scenery offers snowmobilers of all ability levels the chance to find challenges and fun!

Bear Lake Fishing Report

Fishing for cutthroat trout and lake trout has been good for anglers who are both trolling and jigging. If you are trolling, use downriggers with U-20 to T-4 sized flatfish and Rapalas in F9-F13 sizes. Most anglers are using chrome, white, and fluorescent yellow or orange colors. Hot spots have been off Cisco Beach, and 1st and 2nd Points. If you are fishing off the west side of the lake try off the Utah State Park marina, the rockpile off Ideal Beach, and the area south of Gus Rich point to the Rest Area. Begin in about 30’ of water and then move deeper and or shallower until you find the fish. Most fish have been caught in 45-65’ but some cutthroat are being caught on flat lines trolled only 10’ under the surface. If you are jigging, use tube jigs or swim baits in ½ to 1 ounce sizes and 3-6” long. Tip them with a piece of cisco, sucker meat or Gulp minnows and fish the jigs right on the bottom. Reliable colors are white, green and chartreuse.

Bear Lake Area Events

This is Bear Lake Valley’s biggest winter event of the year, including the CISCO DISCO and Polar Plunge. Held in January every year. Anglers wading waist deep in the icy water or fishing through the ice, dip net for the Bonneville Cisco. Once the fishing limit has been caught, the crowds shift to the State Park Marina where the Monster Polar Plunge will take place. Costumes are encouraged, families and groups are welcome, and every participant gets a prize!

Why is Bear Lake Blue?

When you crest the mountain summit and catch a first glimpse of the lake, the rich color is the first thing you notice.

"Bear Lake contains abundant suspended microscopic particles of white-colored calcium carbonate (lime) that reflect the water’s natural blue color back to the surface, giving the lake its intense turquoise-blue color," explains information from the Utah Geological Survey.
