Do you know about the Palio Di Siena horse race? 💁

📜The Palio di Siena is a historic horse race held twice annually, on July 2 and August 16, in the city of Siena, Italy. The event has medieval origins, with the earliest official race documented in 1633, although it likely evolved from earlier games and festivities. The race is a significant cultural event for the Sienese, rooted deeply in the city’s history and traditions.

The race takes place in the Piazza del Campo, Siena’s main square, which is transformed into a racetrack with packed dirt for the occasion. Ten of the seventeen Contrade, or city districts, compete in each race, chosen by a lottery. Each Contrada has its own colors, emblem, and rich traditions, and the race fosters a fierce yet festive rivalry among them.

The preparation for the Palio involves months of training and selecting the best horses and jockeys. The horses are considered the true stars of the race, with a special mass known as the “blessing of the horse” conducted for them in each Contrada’s church on the morning of the race. Jockeys, often hired professionals, ride ba****ck and employ strategic maneuvers to win, including forming alliances and using whips.

Riding ba****ck increases the difficulty and danger of the race, requiring exceptional skill and balance from the jockeys. The race itself is a thrilling spectacle, consisting of three laps around the piazza. Every turn hides risks due to the tight, irregular track and high speeds, making falls and collisions common. The most perilous section is the San Martino curve, where horses and riders often lose their footing.

The winning Contrada earns the Palio banner, a hand-painted silk drape, along with immense pride and celebration. The Palio di Siena is more than a race; it embodies Sienese identity, celebrating the city’s historical, social, and cultural fabric, and uniting the people in their rich heritage.🇮🇹

Good morning from fairytale Patagonia ✨🦄

History and legends 🦉

The Tehuelche people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Patagonian region, spanning both Argentina and Chile. Their history is rich and complex, marked by adaptation, resilience, and significant cultural contributions. Patagonia, with its vast and mystical landscapes, has a rich tradition of fairytales and legends that reflect this cultural heritage and natural wonders. Here are a few Patagonian fairytales and legends:

1. Elal and the Creation of the World:
Elal is a central figure in Tehuelche mythology. According to legend, Elal was born from the union of the sky god and a beautiful woman. He created the world, taught his people survival skills, and was seen as a hero who protected them from giants and other threats.

2. The Gualicho: In Patagonian folklore, Gualicho is an evil spirit or demon believed to cause misfortune, illness, and bad luck. People often performed rituals to ward off Gualicho’s influence, and even today, the term is used to describe bad luck or a curse.

3. The Patagonian Giants: Early European explorers, such as Ferdinand Magellan, reported encounters with giants in Patagonia. These giants were likely inspired by the Tehuelche people, who were taller than the average European at the time (above 2 meters). The myth of the Patagonian giants persisted for centuries.

4. The Legend of Nahuelito: Nahuelito is a mythical creature said to inhabit Nahuel Huapi Lake. Descriptions of Nahuelito resemble those of the Loch Ness Monster—a large, serpent-like creature. Sightings and stories of Nahuelito have been part of local folklore for generations.

5. The Ghost of the Mapuche Chief: According to legend, the spirit of a Mapuche chief guards the lands of Patagonia. The chief appears as a ghostly figure to protect the region from those who wish to exploit its natural resources. This legend reflects the deep connection and respect the indigenous people have for the land.

📝What does the life I choose to live teach me? What does traveling with horses give me?

When you spend extended time in the wilderness and cut all the little threads that still connect you to your so-called “normal” life, you start to rewind and analyze every step that has brought you to your current situation. Every choice, every smile, every loss, every triumph—at the time, these small events were the center of your entire existence.

The more time you spend surrounded by nothing but your own presence, the clearer and lighter your mind becomes. Memories, thoughts, plans, philosophies, wisdoms—they all vanish. And indeed, there comes a period when you think of absolutely nothing. Your mind clears and starts to reflect only the reality that surrounds you - or conversely, the image of reality becomes clearer and finds its pure and true reflection in your freed mind.

These profound realizations lead you to understand one essential truth: nothing truly matters. Past experiences, achievements and failures, even our surroundings —they don’t matter. Everything is relative, transient, and shifts depending on your perspective at any given moment. This isn’t meant to be taken negatively; in fact, I believe it’s the most liberating insight one can have. Embracing this perspective allows us to live a genuinely fulfilling life, free from the constraints of our own expectations and societal norms.

Everything we’ve experienced over the years certainly helps us define ourselves better, both to others and to ourselves. But what happens when we find ourselves in a place where the foundation of our definition of “Who am I?” doesn’t matter and isn’t valid? The simple answer—nothing. And this is where true freedom lies. The freedom to be far not only from the dependencies of our time but also from the idea you have built for yourself and your own life.

In the presence of a horse, silence speaks louder than words…an old Arabic proverb

💭Sitting in silence, I watched the sunset with my horse and I was thinking...

People often wonder if I grow weary of visiting the same places repeatedly due to the tours I organize. The answer remains a resounding no.

Even though I am seeing the same places, I am not the same person. My mind filters everything I observe in a completely different way. My eyes perceive things that I have never recognized before. Returning to familiar places offers profound self-reflection. How have I changed? Have I changed at all? Was it worth it? What have I lost? What have I gained? It offers a unique perspective on life.

In the desert, I realized one thing:

I discovered a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose when leading others, unveiling the cherished beauty of places close to my heart, narrating tales, and bridging cultural differences. It was in these moments that I realized my true calling, my true vocation in life.

As some inquire whether I will seek another guide for my tours or allow travelers to journey alone, I find myself reluctant to do so. My passion for my work runs deep; I am dedicated to what I do and I believe that it is the way I do it that makes my tours a little bit different and unique. The horses, the connection I share with the locals, the deep conversations with my clients, the lessons learned, the wild nature - all this is my energy, my engine and it keeps me going, ready for new endeavors! 🌺❤️

💡Personal Thoughts

I founded Bronco with two goals in mind: to support local cultures and their longstanding traditions with horses and to create a community of horse lovers who are eager to explore the world together. 🌎

I believe that horse culture is a vital link to our heritage and history, reminding us of our roots and who we truly are. 🐎
Traveling with horses opens up a whole new world, immersing you in local culture like nothing else can…

However, after each adventure, I struggle to articulate the richness of my experiences to my family or friends...the words just fail to capture the depth of my emotions and insights…
Every time I come back home, I’m torn between sharing everything and keeping it all to myself - part of me wants to shout out with the wealth of new knowledge I’ve acquired, while another part longs to quietly absorb and savor what I’ve learned.🦉

I yearn for others to witness this wild and authentic beauty firsthand, I yearn for others to immerse themselves in the same journey and emotions and to be active participants in these extraordinary adventures.

Through all these Bronco adventures I want to give you the opportunity to do exactly this…

Something we recently created for Todorov Den - the day we celebrate and honor our horses in Bulgaria. 🇧🇬 🎥shot by the talented @ericbourtchai 📜On Todorov Den, the horse rituals are the centerpiece of the celebration, reflecting the deep connection between Bulgarians and their horses. These rituals, a blend of ancient pagan customs and Christian traditions, symbolize the transition from winter to spring and ensure the health and strength of the horses for the coming agricultural season. 🏇The most prominent event is the “kushii,” or horse races, where horses are groomed, decorated, and raced in village competitions, with the winning horse and rider receiving great honor and prizes. ⛪Before the races, horses are taken to the local church for a blessing ceremony by a priest, invoking the protection of St. Theodore. Special foods, such as bread shaped like horseshoes, are prepared and given to the horses, along with a mixture of grains and salt to fortify them. The community gathers for feasting and celebrations, sharing traditional foods, music, and dancing. ❤️Additional customs include walking horses around sacred sites and children leading decorated horses through the streets to collect treats. These rituals underscore the cultural and practical importance of horses in Bulgarian rural life, marking the beginning of a new agricultural cycle and the arrival of spring.
