Svyat Vechir - A Ukrainian Christmas Eve
#Svyat Vechir - Tonight will be Ukrainian Christmas Eve, or Svyat Vechir as it is known. Traditionally a lighted candle is placed in the window as an invitation to those without families to join in celebrating the birth of Christ. The table is first covered with a small amount of hay in memory of the Christ Child born in the manger. A braided loaf of bread called the Kolach is then placed as a central table decoration. A candle is then placed into the top of the Kolach, this represents the light of the world, or the star that shone over the stable in Bethlehem. Christmas Eve dinner is not served until the first star appears in the sky, signifying the arrival of the Three Kings.
The family then set a place a place at the table to remember someone who has passed away. Ukrainian's believe that the spirit of the deceased unites with the family for this Holy Night.
Sviat Vechir itself consists of twelve meatless dishes symbolizing the twelve Apostles who shared the Last Supper. One of the dishes is traditionally Kutya, an ancient recipe made from wheat, poppy seeds and nuts, in which all members of the family share.
After Sviat Vecher family members join in singing carols and socializing for the remainder of the evening, and the religious attend church services at midnight or early the next morning.
We wish all our Ukrainian Friends and families a Very Happy Svyat Vechir.
To Everyone in Ukraine and around the world. K4T wishes you all a Happy Healthy Christmas
