It's Matt here....writing for the final instalment! Check the photo captions for details of the journey home!

4 weeks to the day since the breakdown, I made it home. I will never forget the incredible people I met along the way, helping me through all this in any way they could. Without them I can't imagine where my head space would have been.

Kevin and Cam - who tried their best to fix the car and then lent me their own personal car for 1100km round trip to Alice Springs from Tennant Creek to drop the family for a flight.

Lee, manager at the Outback Van park - whose kindness and good humour will never be forgotten.

Ros and Rog - Tassie travelling legends who checked on me every day in Alice and told all about their precious life and family.

Pete and Slyvia - Adelaide teachers who were also broken down. Invited me over for dinner and then cards.

Craig - met in the cinema in Adelaide killing time and found out we were both from Canberra, both staying in the same hotel on the same floor in rooms next to each other! We drunk many beers and watched the footy together that night.

Rob - my 2nd cousin, who took us in and lent us the space and tools to get the rig ready for its last journey.

Nath & Suse - who sent me beer to my hotel room in Adelaide.

But mainly my old man deserves all my love and respect. Without him I still wouldn't be home. He jumped on an overnight ferry from Tassie then drove 10 hours straight to Adelaide. One day later after running around and fixing stuff, he towed my camper for 3 days, 1200km back home. All this in a soft top landrover that needs noise cancelling headphones worn to drown out the noise and wind!

Soooo, after getting the long awaited parts fitted, our car was still not fixed... The girls had had enough of hanging out in Tennant Creek and wanted to get back for school and friends etc. After 12 days waiting in Tennant Creek, we made the very difficult decision to book us gals on a flight. This meant we took up the kind offer to borrow a car from the mechanic for Matt to drive us the 1000km return trip to/from Alice Springs airport.

The trip to Alice Springs ended up being very eventful, but we got there in the end... see pics for details of our interesting journey!

The girls have now started back at school and I am still scratching my head wondering how I got here so fast and very much missing the wide-open spaces, warmth and adventure.

So our adventure has ended, but Matt continues on! He is limping home with a boot-load of coolant to continually top up the radiator... not ideal in the middle of nowhere! Hopefully he'll be back in about a week...

It was an unfortunate way to end what was a magnificent 3-month trip as a family to see our amazing and diverse country. We haven't let it taint the good memories though and to be honest, Tennant Creek is not so bad and it quite grew on us!

Thanks for joining along on our travels - maybe it has inspired you to make plans to get out on the road soon too! We'll be making plans for another trip to see the things we missed out on due to the breakdown; namely Uluru!

An update from Tennant Creek... we're still here! Hoping the parts arrive tomorrow🤞. We've kept busy though. Here's some pics of how we are warding off cabin fever and insanity 😆

So... the overheating incident became an issue so we had to stop in Tennant Creek to find a mechanic last Saturday. Being the weekend, we waited until Monday. The mechanic has ordered a new water pump and thermostat which will hopefully do the trick, but as we are in the absolute middle of nowhere, parts arrive when they arrive 😬.

So we have spent the past 7 days waiting around in Tennant Creek with no end in sight 😅!
We almost feel like locals in this little town now and it's certainly an eye-opener for the girls to experience an outback town with many social issues amongst the locals. So far we've had no problems here and the town is kinda growing on us... but, we were supposed to be home this weekend so if anyone feels like picking us up, we're only 3000km's away 😆

I have time on my hands so i'll do a few posts to share some pics of how we have been spending our time. Starting with our home base!

After Kakadu, it was time to head south towards the direction of home. We hoped to swim at Bitter Springs at Mataranka but a salt water croc had been sighted so was closed. We decided to push on the next day to Devils Marbles, but due to some over-heating issues, we had to stop at a cattle station called Banka Banka Station.

Quite a few more pics from the last couple of fun-filled days in Kakadu (besides the mozzies!). The sunrise cruise on the Yellow River was so wonderful and definitely a highlight. Also checking out more rock art, a billabong and sunset at Nourlangie, spectacular Jim Jim Falls and our very last gorge swim was had at Maguk Falls. Swimming in different gorges over the past month or two has been so special; we'll definitely miss them.

We spent 4 nights in Kakadu. The highlights included seeing more amazing Aboriginal rock art, croc watching, swimming at Jim Jim Falls and a spectacular sunrise cruise to watch Kakadu 'wake up'! The lowlights included the hot, humid weather and very friendly mosquitoes...!
These pics are from the first couple of days and will post some more separately!

Darwin certainly turned out to be lots of fun! Full of markets, good eating, shopping and we had a great last night with our travelling crew by joining in with Northern Territory Day celebrations! It is legal for the public to buy fireworks for the big event so they were going off everywhere for many hours! 🎆🧨

Our first camp in the Northern Territory was in Nitmiluk National Park at Katherine Gorge. We had a full day canoeing up the Gorge, and portaging around and over many rapids/rocks. Very tiring but beautiful! We also had a nice surprise by bumping into family there a few days ahead of schedule 😂

A few pics from our time at Lake Argyle; a man-made reservoir. The main feature is an infinity pool with amazing backdrop. Otherwise, we just relaxed and caught up on washing! Next stop; the Northern Territory! Very sad to leave W.A. but will take many happy memories with us ❤️

The next stop after the Gibb was Purnululu National Park to spend a couple of days visiting the World Heritage listed Bungle Bungle Range. The road into the park was slower going than the Gibb, but it was worth it to see this fascinating landscape. Unfortunately there was no swimming there, so we didn't find respite from the heat. We fried!

A few more pics from our time at El Questro, which was our last stop on the Gibb River Road. It was truly an amazing experience to cross such a remote part of our beautiful country and we certainly got used to swimming in a different gorge each day!

After crossing the Pentecost, we said goodbye to dirt roads! Well, at least until the turn-off into El Questro where we spent 4 nights. EQ is full of wonderful gorges and thermal springs to explore and swim in and also has amazing wild life. A little busier than we were used to, but a nice change.

19/06/2023

We were a little worried about crossing the Pentecost River due to watching a couple of others get a little stuck the previous day, but we got across just fine!

After our amazing flight we drove up the Kalumburu Road towards Mitchell Falls to check out some very special Aboriginal rock paintings at Munurru. The road north was fun with more bumpy roads and river crossings!

We had a great couple of nights at Mt Barnett Station as our base to see Manning Gorge. It was a long and very hot (35 degrees!) walk, but so very worth the effort. The walk started with a swim to cross the river to the track, and ended with a swim which helped to keep us cool!

We did a massive grocery shop in Broome to prepare for a couple of weeks on the Gibb River Road through The Kimberley (ie. dehydrated peas and tins of tuna after the fresh stuff is gone!). This road is about 600kms of rough, corrugated dirt roads with very special swimming holes and gorges to cool down in.
Our first night was at Birdwood Downs Station then to Silent Grove campground where we spent the day at the beautiful Bell Gorge.

Next stop was north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula. We spent a couple of nights on Pender Bay at an awesomly rustic Aboriginal community-run campsite to say good-bye to sunsets over the water 😥. The shells on this beach reminded me of how some beaches were when I was younger! So, so beautiful here 💕
