Most people would agree that Singapore is quite clean compared to other countries in the region. The government has focused on the 'Keep Singapore Clean' movement since 1968. The movement is active even until today, to encourage the public to keep Singapore clean.

Singapore's Changi Airport has been named the "World's Best Airport" six times. The buzzing Southeast Asian hub serves 62 million travelers each year and makes layovers more fun by loading up each terminal with amenities. There's a rooftop pool, mesmerizing art, luscious gardens, and even a free movie theater. The airport is also adding a new wing that will be home to the tallest indoor waterfall.

Singapore's "Christmas in the Tropics" is a (mostly) secular festival, celebrated with a highlight on shopping, entertainment, Christmas lights, and Santa showing up in full furs despite the fact that Singapore is smack in the middle of the tropics.

The shopping districts of Orchard Road and Marina Bay explode in a shower of light, while adjoining malls and shopping centers put on extended hours and special deals to attract sightseeing tourists. And when New Year ticks down, countdown parties will pull out all the stops!

The Singapore Skyline - No longer just a stop-over hub, Singapore is a fully-fledged tourism hot spot. A comfortable flight time (6 -8hrs), 3hr time difference, strong dollar and an all-year round 30 degree climate are just the tip of the iceberg. Even if you were there three years ago, you’ll notice a very different Singapore today. From traditional hawker street food markets to the glamour of some of Asia’s best rooftop bars and designer shops, Singapore is a multi-faceted destination offering travellers the perfect blend of history, culture, arts and adventure. And thanks to a strong economy and subsequent ex-pat community, Singapore is as cosmopolitan as they come.

Travellers will get a kick out of Sentosa Island, a purpose-built island complete with theme park, hotel, adventure experiences and connecting monorail. For those looking to take in the cosmopolitan side of Singapore a visit to Little India, Arab Street and Club Street will unveil the many different cultures of Singapore. A seamless, efficient underground tube system, the cleanest streets you’ve seen, and the friendly faces of local Singaporeans are all other reasons why Singapore is burgeoning to the top of the list for travellers.

Insider Tip: The famous Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel is the single must-do on any traveller’s list. Rudyard Kipling famously wrote The Jungle Book while sipping one himself in the hotel and its magnificent facade is steeped in colonial heritage.

For an add-on to your Singapore stay, Malaysian Langkawi and Sabah are a short flight but a world away from the hustle and bustle of the cosmopolitan vibe.

What does it take to guard the prosperity of Singapore? A 37 metre-tall mythical creature to be precise. The legendary Merlion is a half lion half fish guardian of prosperity which personifies Singapore’s history as a port city. The lion depicts the folklore of Prince Sang Nila Utama’s rediscovery of lion (singa) and City (pura) while the fish tail symbolises ancient fishing village of Temasek, meaning “sea” in Javanese. Today, the majestic Merlion is a Singapore icon attracting visitors from all around the world.

Legend has it that the Merlion would visit Sentosa Island every year to guard Singapore’s well-being. One dark night, the island was threatened by a violent storm and the Merlion fought the thundering skies with its magical powers and preserved the land. This mighty legend remained permanently on the Island through the years to protect Singapore by watching over the ever changing skyline of the Central Business District area and harbour, as well as the country’s economic growth through numerous financial crises. If you think you’ve seen and heard it all, there’s more to the legend inside. Who knows, you could be in luck to uncover more than just curious tales upon making a grand entrance into the larger-than-life icon.

The offshore island of Sentosa, once the domain of tropical forest and rocky coasts, has been redeveloped into a sprawling amusement park where you can swim, sunbathe, whizz down water slides, visit butterfly parks and wax museums, and eat to your heart's content.

Jurong Bird Park. You’ll not want for natural attractions in Singapore. As with many other facets of the City State, Singapore’s Nature Parks are extremely well organised and planned. Singapore Night Safari has many fascinating draws, as does the zoo and the Underwater World. The Jurong Bird Park is justifiably world famous and another big draw is the Reptile Park.

Marina Bay is a bay near Central Area in the southern part of Singapore, and lies to the east of the Downtown Core. Marina Bay is set to be a 24/7 destination with endless opportunities for people to “explore new living and lifestyle options, exchange new ideas and information for business, and be entertained by rich leisure and cultural experiences”. SINGAPORE TOURISM

History of Singapore Tourism Board (STB)

The Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (STPB) was first established in 1964 with the mandate to promote Singapore as a tourist destination. It signalled the government’s recognition of tourism’s potential as an important contributor to the country’s economy.

STPB started out with a staff strength of 25. That year, Singapore welcomed 91,000 visitors.

Under STPB, the early stages of Singapore’s tourism development focused on raising the awareness of Singapore as a destination and building up tourism infrastructure, including major attractions such as Sentosa Island and the Singapore Zoological Gardens.
