I captured a corner of my mooban this morning. This is a path that I always take walking around the village almost daily. It’s a very peaceful place that I can only hear birds chirping and sounds of workers chopping for wood. Occasionally also neighbours pounding their food prepping for meals.

A black cat with golden eye came by while I was sketching. I told him I have to concentrate on drawing and can’t play with him. He sat with me for awhile and set off to busk under the sun. Later on, I saw his shadows on the pavement as he walked back to my direction but on the top of the patio instead 😍.

Where I stay is a sub district of the old city of Chiangmai. It’s very rustic and charming where only bright sun, mountains and greens greet me every morning. It’s a shame to leave this place in a few months time. Yet, my life continues on. I allow myself to continue to expand.

I spent sometime at the premium outlets near my daughter’s sch yesterday morning to sketch while waiting for her to finish her exams. The stores are not opened yet except for the few eateries and cafes. It’s a very peaceful place since this place is not very busy and some stores had closed down since covid period and not reopened.

Since I started sketching on the MRT and outdoors, I know that I have to observe and draw fast. Outdoor situations change randomly and there can be many layers of information to plan and sketch at the same time. As much as I enjoyed the peace and cooling weather in Chiangmai while I sketched, the sun came in to remind me to sketch faster. I came to a point where I have to stop as it’s just too glaring for my eyes to continue drawing.

The coloured version was only done this morning.

The 2nd interesting thing about using this fude nib is the colour produced from the nib. It spreads my noodler’s black into grey tone. It looks like watercolour in a pen. Oh how I ❤️ it!!

I also discovered this same watercolour effect from the blue removable cartridge that I put into my Lamy. Maybe that ink is more suitable for Lamy after all.

I’ve decided to release these origami hearts to spread some Christmas cheers in Chiangmai! 🎄🧑‍🎄🤩🥰 Each of them are created on a hexagonal shaped paper, 16 grids on each side. The next week will be making more and packaging, I will be sending them to my frequent vegan / vegetarian eateries and cafes ❤️!

There is something about these Zen tracks that aligns with me so much while sketching this temple outside the cafe I’m in now.

Life on earth is an illusion. But because humans have emotions and these feelings are so real that makes us feel like Earth’s illusionary is the truth.

Music is ever so moving. Is it a mistake? It’s also a form of expression that can be so sticky. Over and over again I can play this piece of music while I put this down.

But always remember, just go back to One. It’s part of One. It’s separation but not separation.

I like the simpler 3 layers design which is my trial piece. I enjoy folding the 5 layers green piece because the process is just so peaceful after the arduous part of figuring out how it should works.

The green piece is my 3rd piece. The previous blue piece couldn’t make it. They all starts from a 64 x 64 square grid.

I’m quite surprise how a big piece of paper can shrunk into such a small artwork. 31 x 31cm > 13.5 x 13.5cm. Just how collapsible origami can be.

That’s the main reason why Nasa applied origami’s collapsible techniques to build satellite solar panels.

I have big papers at home which I think I will use to collapse another 7 layers Clover. I think it will be quite enjoyable for the next piece. It’s not a coincidence that Japanese goes into Zen practise. It flows into their life as well.

This piece is dedicated to my friend Lidia.

Thanks to Lidia for extending her sincere help and concerns in times when I needed most in CM. She herself has lead an amazing life with her young son since she settled here several years ago and I truly admire her courageous and fighting spirit!! 🤩🌅

I hope my artwork, the “Flower of Life” can bring in some sense of calmness and tranquility to her family 🙏.

My next exploration. Started off with a basic square pleat fold that i thought will lead to nothing interesting. Pleats are generally boring, they’re flat and dun do much engagement unless the audience is into sacred geometry.

I stopped folding since July this year after I completed my Flower of Life. It’s a great accomplishment esp when folding origamis of these kind which requires technical skills that I have 0 knowledge in. The books I bought from yr 2019 are yet to be completed 😅.

I thought I will stop folding for a long time but somehow, the Zen of folding draws me back. Those moments of creation and paper sounds allows me into Being. 🙏

I believe I will gain more technical knowledge by redoing and completing all the folds in the books.

PTT gas stations are my fav stops whenever there’s any last minute buys or a need for a quick run to the toilets! Due to its spacious surroundings, PTT gas stations always reminds me of our road trips to Msia when the kids are really young, the feeling of those adventures and happiness on the trips came back in memories 🫶 whenever I went to PTT gas stations. We love to have stopovers at this gas station due to its clean restrooms, access to Amazon cafe, 7-11 or Jiffy stores, avocado smoothie store and some other stores or services that will appear at different PTT on routes to areas out of Chiangmai province. This particular new PTT gas station that’s only set up last year is on the superhighway going to Saraphi. I love the spaciousness and sense of peace, quietness whenever I’m at this station. 😍

Our first house in Chiangmai is somewhere 400m behind the buildings on the right side. We selected this house because the location is a walkable distance to Central Airport Plaza. Having just relocated then, we do not want to stay at a location that’s inaccessible to amenities. We tried to walk to the plaza a few times but in the end, due to high noon temperatures (37C) in summer times and heavy, messy traffic at this junction, we stopped our walks to the plaza and drove over instead. It’s still a great memory passing by this junction as we took a U turn just now.

Here’s a short video clip of my sketches into my own travel sketchbook printed from Amazon. It’s has just been a short 2 months plus that i’ve worked on it, using ballpoint pens to sketch on the thin papers.

I had my childhood fun using stickers from Diaso and Moshi stores, it’s just simply fun and happiness journaling down my day whether i’m on a road trip travelling or passing my day 😊.
