Polo is a sport played by thousands of people around the world and enjoyed by millions. To keep polo and all the tournaments held, maintaining a fair competition, a handicap is needed. In this article, we are going to share with you everything you need to know about handicap.

What is handicap
The handicap is a system created in 1890 by Henry Lloyd Herbert to rate a polo player, referring to their importance in their team. The overall score is assigned according to the player’s horsemanship, team play, knowledge of the game, strategy, horses, the number of tournaments played, the performance in the team and in each tournament, amongst other.

How do I get one
A player's handicap is usually assessed by a committee at the authorizing club of their country. In Argentina, the Argentine Polo Association (Asociación Argentina de Polo) the one responsable for evaluating polo player’s performance and assigning their handicap.

What scale system does it use
In cases where a professional player competes in other countries, there may be assigned an equivalent rating in those countries. Though standards are similar, the ratings may be expressed differently. In Argentina, the handicap goes from 0 to 10. Meanwhile in the USA it follows a system that combines letters and numbers: C (-2), B (-1), B+ (-0.5), A (0), A+ (0.5), 1.0, 1.5, 2 to 10. Lastly, in England the handicap starts at -2 and goes up to 10.
In all cases, the highest handicap possible is reserved for the best polo players.

How does it influence the game
When playing a polo match where handicaps are considered, all the handicaps of each team’s 4 members are totaled. If that sum is higher than that of the rival team, the difference in handicap is converted into a goal advantage. For example, if the difference equals 3, this would mean that the team with the highest handicap gets a 3-goal-advantage over their rivals.

How We Take Care Of Our Polo Fields

Polo Holidays are all about the best polo horses and the polo players, but also about the best polo fields. The quality of the field can greatly influence the quality and dynamic of the game itself. This is how we take care of our polo fields:

The maintenance of these spaces is essential for a quality polo that is highly enjoyed. We pay special attention to the type of drainage that the courts have, both grass and sand, to prevent moisture from concentrating, ruining the surface and making it difficult for the ball and horses to run. In both types of pitches, the sand plays a fundamental role in achieving good drainage.

Additionally, the ground on the field must first be broken and then recomposed so that the horses have a better grip on the ground, avoiding falls.

Other equally important care to maintain the quality of the grass court is to make regular maintenance cuts of approximately 5 centimeters, accompanied by abundant watering, especially in hot summer times.

In addition, to keep the grass looking green and fresh, even during winter time, it is important to mix seeds from different grasses and spread fertilizers throughout the soil.

What is the training of polo ponies like?

Proper professional training is fundamental for horses who are going to play polo. Usually this preparation takes 2 years, with most horses beginning their training at 3 years of age. Any preparation before that is known as taming the horse rather than training them for polo.

Polo ponies need to lose their fear of bumping into other horses as well as running towards the ball and be comfortable with mallets swinging near their heads. Basic polo training in the field consists of engaging in a gradually non-stop galloping until reaching periods of about seven minutes. It also includes mark training, which is when the horse is asked to run in circles around the trainer, going progressively from bigger to smaller circles at various speeds. This helps them be agile and quick so as to be able to chase the ball and change movements frequently.


Most importantly, they need to feel comfortable around people, being ridden often by different people and knowing how to respond to the rider’s commands using his or her legs.


Only after the horse is done with this training, they will start to play polo at the age of 5 and will continue to do so until they retire from the sport at the age of 12. However, some horses can continue to play until they are 15, but that is not the usual case.


Finally, polo horses usually play 4 to 6 chukkas per match, of 7 and ½ minutes each. This means they need to maintain a good physical condition. Because the sport demands a significant physical effort of the horse, it custom for a single polo player to ride multiple different horses per match. This prevents the animal from getting too tired, being more prone to injuries and having a lower overall level of game. This means that even after a polo pony has completed its training, they still need to stay active to perform well when playing.
