Wezeltown Terraced Gardens Motorcycles, Magic and Malcontents We are a homestead farm operated by family with support from our community.

We sell our veggies, greens, herbs, mushrooms, starts, eggs, and a variety of value added products using our medicinal herbs. We also serve as a demonstration homestead for all those looking to learn from a visit. We preserve our harvests through canning, freezing and drying. We make mead, raise and process our own chickens for meat, and control invasive species.

Homestead dinner. Does it pay off? It’s a matter of priorities. I don’t post much these days. I scaled back, way back since I’m working more outside the home more. This year will be the first in 14 years that I don’t have baby chicks for meat or eggs. I just can’t deal. Sad day when I take that last bird out of the freezer. But hopefully next year I’ll be back to hatching little dibs.

Homestead is a busseling. Tater harvest, lambs quarters harvested, blanched and froze, waterline repairs, mower repair, canning and fermenting. And got a special surprise from this Carolina Mantid egg case, looks like it already hatched but excited me none the less.

10, 2 week old chicks for sale.
$5 each. Some are Sagitta, which is a Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire and Cornish Cross. They rest are a cross with Sagitta daddy and an Americana/Dark Brahma cross mama. Not sure who is who, but they are cute, it’s a straight run so you may get a hen or rooster.
They are hatched from Wezeltown chickens fed organic feed for generations.

Please DM if interested, I no longer have the FB app on my phone.

Rabbit and I about to have some words. I put up a fence and it’s still getting in. I’ll be electrifying that fence today in hopes the broccoli, cabbage, kholrabi, and cauliflower will regrow.

I like to make my yogurt but can’t do it all the time. I hate all the waste store bought yogurt makes and where I live they don’t recycle #5. A good alternative to using the container is to cut it up for labeling your veggies.

My poor rooster. Temps got down to 2 last month. We put a heat lamp in their house and kept them locked up for the coldest part but I guess it wasn’t enough. His comb froze, turned black and is falling off. He is in good health and spirts. Wondering if it will grow back or stay like that. I imagine it will stay un-lobed.

5 roosters need homes or they are headed to the stew pot. They are all Dark Brahma/ Ameraucana cross. Butcher Date is September 17th. We also have 30 meat birds to do that day so I don’t really need these for food either. They are about 4 months old, Free.

A word on bird netting. Bird netting is often used to keep out birds from your fruit bushes. But it’s also a snake killer ( and song birds get feet tangled in it) I’ve seen it happen many times before so I stopped using it but I bought this chick fence that is just the regular electric netting fence I use, but with bird netting at the base to keep chicks from squeezing through the bigger holes. It’s light weight but that’s all the good I have to say about this fence. Snakes start to slither through but then their body is bigger than their head and they can go no further and the way snakes scales overlap prevents them from going backwards (scales get stuck on netting wire) so they die. I’m glad this time it was a copperhead at least.

Pawpaws! We love them, but be warned about where to plant them. These wonderful plants reproduce easily from seed and root sprouts. It’s the root sprouts I want to warn you about. Once your tree becomes established it will start sending up many many many sprouts. That’s cool except you can’t easily dig them out, they are deep and they will just keep coming and coming. I’m seeing them pop up 20 ft away. And not just one or two but hundreds!

Please educate yourself before planting anything. Especially Mint!!! Oh God! Only put mint in pots please!!!! I’m not joking! I spend endless hours pulling mint every year. A homestead in the same land for 45 years has some lessons learned. Oh and hostas, don’t plant hostas! Don’t believe me, come for a visit and you can see for yourself how it has invaded the forest.

Cheers!

Voles! I hate voles. I was saving several leeks for seed and one by one the voles have eaten them. So this is how I catch them. I have also used crushed Vit D mixed with peanut butter and dropped in holes. But I’m not sure if that really works. Voles can’t handle vit D, it kills then but if my dog then gets a hold of it and eats it, it won’t hurt them or any other wildlife.

This is my pump house. It’s not pretty but it keeps my ferments cool, my potatoes moist and cold, and my vinegar just right. I would love a fancy root cellar one day but I’ve found spots that work for now. I’ll post of my can house later.

Jacob’s Cattle Bean AKA Bo Jack Beans here at Wezeltown. Not a huge harvest but not bad considering we ate them as snap beans for a while as well. I highly recommend this variety. In a month we will harvest our Pinkeye Beans a type of southern pea.

Waste nothing! Today we butchered 23 meat birds. We use the organs, feet and heads in stock and dog food and refine the fat to use for frying. And of course the kids helped as well as our good neighbors. Thank you Tricia and John Baehr.

(I know I should eat the organs and I’ve tried but I can’t seem to really love it. It always is forced)

Hard to see but there are veins in this egg. We are incubating eggs from our chickens this year for the first time. We have 36 and they should hatch around June 2. We candled them today and all but one looked great! My guess is that half (or over half) will be roosters and a few won’t make it, so that would leave me with roughly 15 hens and a bunch of roosters for dog food or stew or stock. These are mostly gonna be Whiting True Blues (Ameraucanas) but one of the two roosters is a Dark Brahma, it will be fun to see what we get.
