The first beautiful saffron crocus (crocus sativus) are blooming along our pathways in Sicily. The 3 deep orange stigmas are the precious saffron spice, and it takes about 150 flowers to produce just 1 gram of saffron, which explains its high price.(Don't confuse this saffron crocus with the common autumn crocus - Colchicum autumnale-that is poisonous!)
