Heard of the viral "WannaCry" ransomware spreading aggressively in recent weeks? If not, we'll give you a quick breakdown:
What is it:
This virus is most commonly distributed via email attachments. You may get an email from someone you know with a very enticing subject or attachment name. If you weren't expecting the email, validate with the sender before opening. This virus deploys and agent on your machine that encrypts all of your data. The key to the encrypted data is then sent to the hackers who hold it for ransom - usually in the form of $300 or more worth of Bitcoin.
How do I protect myself:
1. Maintain a dependable, updated antivirus. We highly recommend Eset NOD 32. This antivirus has proactively protects from this virus as well as just about any others.
2. Keep backups of your data! Make sure any data worth having is backed up! Online vendors are great. Things like Google Drive, Amazon Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. If you elect to have a local backup, make sure that it's a drive that can be unplugged and taken offline. If it's an external drive that's plugged in when the virus attacks, that drive will be encrypted as well.
3. Keep backups of your data!
What to do if the virus has already infected my computer:
We advise against buying out your data in most cases. There's no guarantee that the attackers will turn over the keys to your data after paying and with Bitcoin, there's no way to regain those funds once sent. At this point, you're only course of action is to wipe the PC and re-install Windows from scratch. From here, hopefully you have backups to restore your data.
