If you are travelling to Machu Picchu during the wet season, especially in January or February, you should allow 2 or 3 extra days for your visit in case landslides should disrupt the train services.

If there are no vacancies for the Inca Trail but you still want to do some adventure trekking on your way to Machu Picchu then there are a few alternatives to consider. The least used of these would be the trek from Lares to Ollantaytambo through the mountains that border the north side of the Sacred Valley. This could also be combined with a 1 or 2 day Mountain Bike tour starting in either Calca or near Cusco.

When travelling to and/or from Machu Picchu by train, you need to be at the stations 30 minutes before departure. The buses, that operate between the town and Inca site of Machu Picchu, take 20 to 25 minutes each way.

When bringing cash, to exchange for Soles in Peru, make sure it is in excellent condition which means that it doesn't have even the tiniest tears. Also, when receiving cash, other than Soles, make sure it is also in excellent condition in case you need to exchange it later. This is because the banks won't accept such notes & hence neither can the money exchangers who offer a better rate than the banks or airports.
