The Virtual Manager Podcast is going live!⠀

As of this Friday, I will be hosting a LIVE version of The Virtual Manager Podcast every single week on Clubhouse.⠀
⠀
The podcast provided bite-sized music industry tips to music artists, helping you to progress your music careers and better navigate the industry. I know how useful this has been over the last couple of years, and it’s how many of you found my work.⠀

However, what it didn’t allow was for me to interact with you - hear your thoughts and answer your questions.⠀
⠀
For those of you who are long-time followers, you’ll know that I first started by giving free seminars to music artists on Facebook Live (several years ago now!) So this new chapter of the podcast represents a ‘back to basics’ for me.⠀

Why I’m no longer guaranteeing results🔮
⠀
I created The Virtual Manager for one simple reason; I wanted to provide as many music artists as possible with the information they needed to progress their music careers.⠀
⠀
What I did not set out to do was guarantee results. ⠀
⠀
The reason for this is because results can vary for a multitude of reasons (most of which have absolutely nothing to do with how good the music is). For example, timing, luck, mindset, health, resources, location, personality, trends, technology, and ex*****on, amongst others.⠀
⠀
The problem with striving for results is that you may be setting false expectations. ⠀
⠀
Then, when you don’t get those exact results (despite the incredible progress, learnings and creativity achieved along the way) you feel you’ve ‘failed’. ⠀
⠀
This can then cause you to quit music because you think you’re not getting as good ‘results’ as another artist.⠀
⠀
This is the exact opposite of what I set out to help you achieve. ⠀
⠀
That’s why, from here on in, I’m no longer guaranteeing results.⠀
⠀
I cannot guarantee you results. And neither can anyone else so please avoid managers, programmes or services that guarantee you 10,000 new fans overnight, hit songs or huge earnings.⠀
⠀
You could be the most talented music artist in the world, with the most incredible team, and still not achieve certain results. That’s the reality of pursuing a music career.⠀

The Virtual Manager is not about RESULTS.⠀
⠀

- Produced The Virtual Manager podcast⠀
- Tutored and given masterclasses at dozens of music colleges & conferences⠀
- Sourced vocalists, scouted talent and judged auditions on several high-profile projects⠀
- And, of course, managed a roster of artists throughout ⠀

There have also been many mis-steps, mistakes and flat out failures.

Circumstances, trends, technology and marketing strategies will change, so if you’re an artist at the beginning of your journey, just know that adaptability is always an asset.⠀

When it comes to successful, sustainable music careers, the truth is that they’re built day-by-day and step-by-step (just like any business would be).⠀

That means it’s less about the ‘big’ things you do (or might happen), and much more about the small things you do consistently. But how do you stay consistent throughout the coming year?⠀

You build habits into your routine. For example:⠀
⠀
•Practising your instrument/voice once a day⠀
•Posting on social media and engaging with followers 4 x per week⠀
•Scheduling a songwriting session into every weekend⠀
•Listing out your priority action steps each week⠀
•Communicating with your mailing list once per month⠀
•Measuring your progress and looking at your data analytics at the end of every month⠀

What are the best next steps you can take to move your music career forward in 2021?⠀

As we move into a new year, now is a great time to reflect on where you are right now in your music career, before then setting your goals for the coming year.⠀
⠀
For music artists, who have so much to juggle, I know it can be challenging to work out which actions to prioritise and where best to focus your (limited) time and energy. Answering these questions should help you get clear on exactly what your best next steps are.⠀
⠀
Of most importance is question number 3 - what would most move your music career forward in 2021? You may have a few things to jot down in answer to this, but for almost all music artists this will (or should!) include building a tangible, engaged fanbase. This is because it’s a fanbase that gives you a career (and not the other way around).⠀

I keep seeing lots of ‘X sales make the same amount as X streams’ comments as part of the ongoing streaming debate. Streams and sales are not the same, and the two aren’t comparable. It’s important to understand the difference as a music artist.

The road to 'success' (whatever that means for you) is littered with 'failures'. Successful careers will include a string of failures, mistakes, lessons and let downs - alongside 'wins', progress and celebrations.

AR Artist Management is nearly 10 years old, and there have been more 'fails' than I can possibly count!

Failure is not final, so please don't quit when you encounter one.
