I had a wonderful surprise when my Mother gave me many boxes of slides and old family pictures from my Grandmother. Curious about past generations, I scanned the slides and pictures. I am lucky enough to have my Mother to tell who the people are. I have heard about past generations my whole life, I had not seen pictures of them before. Sorry Tuesdays tip is a little late this week. Recently I was able to attend a presentation, at Sons of Norway Mandt Lodge Stoughton WI, about researching Norwegian Genealogy. Jerry Paulson was the speaker from NAGCNL he referenced this book a lot. It was available for purchase and I am so glad I bought it. A lot of information inside and very helpful. Go to NAGCNL.ORG where they are available to help start the journey of discovering your heritage.

I was outside working on my genealogy yesterday. I came across this in the paperwork. No author attributed to it nor idea when it was written. Reading this I couldn’t help but think how people and times have changed. I found it very refreshing to take a look back, if only for a moment.

Tuesdays Tip ~ Now that you have decided how you want to do the important steps of storage, archiving and labeling pictures. It is important to store pictures in three places and in different formats. You can save the originals in a safety deposit box, another persons home. You can save on flash drive, cd or cloud these are a few suggestions. They can all fail that is why as many formats as possible is a good idea. PLEASE REMEMBER when technology changes keep up with it. How awful if all the work you have done would be for naught if you can't get to the pictures. I hope this series of suggestions have been helpful to you. At this point I could help you with digitizing the pictures and forms. I encourage you to contact me with any comments.

Tuesday Tips~This week I wanted to talk about labeling pictures. Find an archival business they will offer special writing tools to label pictures. They should be used because over time regular writing utensils could harm the picture. I found labeling very enjoyable. Determine who has the knowledge of the pictures. Make plans to visit the appropriate person talk to them about the pictures. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I asked about the name of Grandpas farm and it triggered a new memory that was important to the family history. Write the memories while you talk or I recorded audio for some of them. You might want the person to hold the picture and reminisce.. while making a video. There are many ways to do this. I encourage you to contact me with any questions or ideas.

Tuesdays tip~ Hopefully with your research you decided on storage for the photographs. Next step is fun and can be frustrating decisions, decisions. Looking at old pictures you probably want to keep all of them. You first need to decide what ones to keep. I like pictures where you see how they lived or hobbies. The family gatherings are a must too. The photographs can tell a story with just one. When scanning my Grandmothers slides I found a picture of my two great aunts, at a roadside rest stop, which you don't see many anymore. In the photograph I saw what they wore, what kind of dishes they used and some food to have a picnic. I learned how they traveled and where they would stop to eat. This slide is a mini story to me. The next picture is of two boys who went fishing the fun part starts now cleaning the fish. The little one is enjoying it all. This is a hobby picture. If it is a group of photographs for a birthday party or other occasion you don't need to keep all of them. Choose the least amount to keep but still tell the story. You can use this procedure on all of the different groups you have separated the photographs into. This can also be used for all the current digital pictures you have. Clean up some room on the computer or iPhone at the same time. Next week we'll talk about labeling photographs after you have saved the ones you want. Please email me if you have any questions. Deb

~HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA~
Tuesdays Tip~ When choosing storage options first determine if you will want to access photos easily or just store them. If you will be accessing often think about something that will be easy to use. They have sleeves available to slide the picture into and any comments are visible. This is a very good option you can touch the outside of the sleeve to look at the picture and not worry about fingerprints or anything else to deteriorate the photographs. If you have any questions please click below and message me.

Tuesdays Tip ~ Now that you decided you want to keep the photographs you need to decide what to do with them. The first thing you want to do decide how to store them. There are ways to extend the life of the photographs. Find an archival business that sells the correct products. There is criteria that should be met for this important step. See attached picture for an idea. If you have any questions or would like a few suggestions please message me by clicking at the bottom.

"Tuesdays Tip" you're the family member who received the old pictures, slides and negatives, you're thinking what am I going to do with all of these. Do you have an interest in them, should you find someone who does. Each family usually has some member or members who would like to receive them. Don't forget to ask outside of the immediate family. I really don't know how long photographs will be around. So don't make rash decisions with them. I have been working with slides from my Grandmother for two plus years. Because of the slides I was able to learn so much about my ancestors and reconnect with relatives new and old.
