Carole and Dallas's farm near Maclear: the Pot river; the view of the Drakensberg mountains from their lounge; their one-year-old Ridgeback; a walk on the neighbouring farm revealed this touching gravestone. Our road trip ended here. Thanks for travelling with us.

Chalumna, just south of East London. The Chalumna River from a high point on our hosts' land. Wendy and her brother Lindsay. A view from the house down to the river - wow! We visited Martin - he had commissioned some furniture from my old friend Rob, a veritable artist working with wood. I sat in this chair for an hour - extremely comfortable. A magnificent sea pool at Sea Vale nearby.

St Francis Bay. A painting of 'Bruce's Beauties' and the actual spot at St Francis where Bruce found the perfect wave. The estuary, port with squid boats, and the view from 'our' canalside digs - Thanks Thomas.

Prince Alfred Pass going north from Knysna to Avontuur. A high point reminded me of Switzerland in summer. The pass was built by Thomas Bain in 11860-67; love those retaining walls.

Sedgefield. The view from a high point of the tidal lagoon. Wild Oats market, the place hums. Walking to Gericke's Point at spring low tide, passing some fossilised dunes. With a school friend, Monty, at Hoekwil in their beautiful garden. With the legendary Ari and some of his many visitors.

George: you pick your own at Redberry Farm. R50 for that big punnet. Good fun. The Transport Museum is mostly train-related, but also has about 60 cars - this Studebaker is my idea of a BEAUTIFUL car.

This is the pass going down to the Die Hel valley. Our cottage was at the far end, a mere 48 km of tortuous track from the main road, and it took us 4 hours including a quick picnic and photo stops. The low bridge (about 100 metres long) was flooded about 40 cm deep, which was fine ... but what happens if it rains in the catchment chum? You are trapped, is what happens. Everyone said the road was the worst it has ever been, and I peronally will not go back there until the road is fixed.

Sutherland. We visited SALT, some 18 km outside down on a small plateau. The South African Astronomical Telescope. It shares the site with probably 30 lesser telescopes operated remotely by universities etc around the world. If you are looking for the ultimate 4x4 motorhome, there it is with Wayne and Ronelle - they sold their house to buy it and are almost permanently on the road. A wonderful 'chance' meeting.

I can highly recommend chalets in a pear orchard, when the trees are in bloom. Utterly peaceful. Otter's Bend just outside Franschhoek. The Huguenot Monument, and the view of Franschhoek across the plum orchard at San Rochelle - Sir Richard Branson's.

Silvermine is our favourite hike in Cape Town, ten minutes from Sun Valley and its malls. We like the circular route that takes in views of Noordhoek and Long Beach, and Hout Bay.

The West Coast Fossil Park, south of Paternoster and thus not that far from Cape Town, was simply OUTSTANDING. Go visit when you can. They have a guided tour at 11 am, which is a must. Fossilised bones, some 500 million years old, have been uncovered there, showing many animal species that no longer exist, eg the short-necked giraffe.

Nieuwoudville boasted this fabulous place, the Hantam Botanical Institute (or similar name). It lives in this sandstone farmhouse built in the late 1800s as I recall. It has hectares of fields all around, with a wide variety of wild flowers - and you can walk among them all day if you like. That's Terry being good and using her crutches. And a waterfall just outside town.

We stopped at Springbok for a coffee and roosterbrood, at a place called the Herb Garden, or something similar. There was no garden and no herbs, but possibly the best coffee of the whole trip; but there was this contraption. Any guesses?

Two views of the Roman Catholic cathedral at Pella, near Augrabies. It was built by French missionaries in the late 1800s, using only an encyclopaedia to guide them. An extraordinary place, I kept asking myself: Why here? And the answer was right in front of me, about 10 metres from the cathedral: water bubbling to the sandy surface, even to this day. (This was also the first of several places where we saw rugby fields without a blade of grass.)
