On Day 3 of the Yukon itinerary, we spend the day exploring Fort Selkirk, a location steeped in rich history. Originally founded by Robert Campbell of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1848, Fort Selkirk became a bustling town during the gold rush. The Canadian government even sent a company of the Yukon Field Force to join the RCMP there. Today, the remains of this historic settlement offer an intriguing glimpse into the past and make for an unforgettable day of sightseeing and photography.

🚤✨ Fort Selkirk Highlights: St. Francis Xavier Church ✨🚤

Built in 1898, St. Francis Xavier Church is a piece of Yukon history that has stood the test of time.

Originally the second Catholic church in the Yukon, it had a rocky start—closing just a year after its completion due to a declining population. In 1942, Father Bobillier, affectionately known as Father “Bob,” revived its presence in Fort Selkirk. His first task? Moving the entire church from the waterfront to its current location after discovering it wasn’t built on church-owned land!

✨ Unique Feature: The log structure uses piece-en-piece construction, a rare French architectural style in the Yukon. Father Bob also modified the interior, moving the altar forward to create a living space at the back of the church.

A fascinating piece of history nestled in the wild beauty of the Yukon River, this church stands as a testament to resilience and adaptability.

Loons are more than just a picturesque sight on Bowron Lake—they’re fascinating creatures! Did you know:
🪶 Loons have solid bones (unlike most birds), which helps them dive up to 60 meters to catch fish.
🎵 Their haunting calls are a signature sound of the Canadian wilderness and serve to communicate with other loons, especially during breeding season.
🌊 Bowron Lake’s pristine environment makes it the perfect home for these incredible birds, which depend on clear waters to hunt and thrive.

"The Bowron Canoe circuit is one of the world's most beautiful canoe trips, unforgettable and not to be missed if you love wilderness canoe camping! It is physically challenging, but well paced and every day's work is rewarded by swimming in crystal clear waters, surrounded by magnificent scenery. I am so glad I went!
Ultimately the quality of any wilderness trip is only as good as the quality of the guides, who ensure comfort and safety around the clock. Our guides Alex and Attila earned my unreserved appreciation. Each day I admired more their skills in so many areas: wilderness knowledge, people skills, and cooking delicious meals tailored to individual tastes. They were constantly alert to safety concerns. And quick-witted with a keen sense of humor that kept the group in great spirits.
On the planning side, Melisa's communication was very accommodating of our specific needs and offered welcome flexibility and support.
This is not really a beginner trip -- some wilderness camping/canoeing experience will make you much more comfortable. Under "wish I had known", participants should bring along their own canoe seat/backrest to augment the cane seats, which are quite low in the canoes.
In short, hats off to Pathways for making this trip available-- a once in a lifetime experience and most highly recommended!"

Fort Selkirk, nestled along the Yukon River, holds a treasure trove of history. We are lucky to have this stop on our route and share its rich stories with our paddlers. Once a vital trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company, this site is a blend of Indigenous and settler history, with remnants of old buildings standing as reminders of the past.
