It was a wonderful day at Viking as we named the newest addition to our fleet of award-winning ocean ships—the Viking Vela.

In a traditional ceremony in Trieste, Italy, we celebrated our longtime partnership with Fincantieri. Ivana Elice, Vice President and Project Manager of the Fincantieri Cruise Business Unit, served as ceremonial godmother of the Viking Vela. In keeping with the naming tradition, Ivana was presented with a historic Viking broad axe by Ann Ziff, the esteemed philanthropist, Chairman of The Metropolitan Opera and godmother of the Viking Saturn. The same axe was previously used in the naming of the Viking Saturn in June 2023.

After the axe presentation, Ivana pressed a button that allowed a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull. Guests also enjoyed Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos and godmother of the Viking Jupiter, and acclaimed Italian singer Alessandro Safina, who paid tribute to the cultures of both Norway and Italy in song.

We look forward to welcoming more ships to our growing fleet—will you join us on an upcoming ocean voyage? https://explore.viking.com/3Zmxb4z

On November 5, 2024, we named our newest river ships, the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek, with a special celebration in Luxor, Egypt.

The Hon. Edward Herbert served as ceremonial godfather of the Viking Hathor; his great-great-grandfather, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, was Howard Carter’s benefactor and co-explorer, whose excavation uncovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen near Luxor almost exactly 102 years earlier on November 4, 1922.

Mohamed El Banna, a member of the Egyptian Senate and the founder of Cosmos Egypt, our exclusive tour operator in Egypt, served as the ceremonial godfather of the Viking Sobek.
