🌻What is the Camino walk we are doing in Portugal and Spain in September ?
🌸Portugal and Spain Camino Walk - 21 Sept - 4 Oct 2025, Euro 6900 twin share / single supplement EUR1400🌸

👣The Camino de Santiago, or in English the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrims' ways leading to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried.

🚶🏼‍♀️As Pope Benedict XVI said, "It is a way sown with so many demonstrations of fervour, repentance, hospitality, art and culture which speak to us eloquently of the spiritual roots of the Old Continent."Many still follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. It is also popular with hikers, cyclists, and organized tour groups.

🚶🏼‍♀️Created and established after the discovery of the relics of Saint James the Great at the beginning of the 9th century, the Way of St. James became a major pilgrimage route of medieval Christianity from the 10th century onwards. But it was only after the end of the Granada War in 1492, under the reign of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, that Pope Alexander VI officially declared the Camino de Santiago to be one of the "three great pilgrimages of Christendom", along with Jerusalem and the Via Francigena to Rome.

🌸In 1987, the Camino, which encompasses several routes in Spain, France, and Portugal, was declared the first Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.

FUN FACTS about GIN:
The British in colonial India drank gin primarily because it was used to make tonic water more palatable, which was consumed for its medicinal benefits against malaria. Here’s the background:
1. Malaria and Quinine
Quinine, derived from the bark of the cinchona tree, was discovered to be effective in treating and preventing malaria.
Quinine was extremely bitter, making it unpleasant to consume on its own.

2. The Creation of Tonic Water
To make quinine easier to ingest, it was mixed with sugar and water, creating an early form of tonic water.
British colonials added gin to this mix, both to improve the taste and because gin was a popular spirit at the time.

3. Cultural Factors
Gin had been a favored drink in Britain for centuries, partly because it was cheap and widely available.
Drinking gin and tonic became a ritual in the hot and challenging climate of India, offering a sense of familiarity and comfort.

4. Colonial Lifestyle
The drink became associated with colonial leisure and sophistication, especially among British officers and officials.
The gin and tonic culture evolved as part of the broader social habits of the British elite in India.

While modern tonic water contains much less quinine and is primarily consumed for its flavor, the gin and tonic's origins are deeply tied to the practical need to combat malaria in colonial times.

This is interesting 🌻 How important is it to you to catch up on sleep on holiday?

Sleep might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to travel. But that could be set to change, with sleep tourism emerging as a significant trend.

Did you know there are only two words for “tea“ worldwide? It’s such an important drink, it’s a ritual, it brings people together to communicate, discuss and debate. We love to drink it in different forms in different countries. It‘s a way to connect our cultures, whether it be a mint tea in Morocco or a sweet black tea in Egypt, a milky masala chai in India…
The two words are variations of **"tea"** and **"cha"** (or "chai"), which trace back to the Chinese origins of tea:

1. **"Tea"** (and similar variants like *té*, *thee*):
This term comes from the Min Chinese dialect (e.g., Amoy or Hokkien), where tea is called **"te"**. It spread through maritime trade routes, especially via Dutch and Portuguese traders, to countries like England, France, and parts of Europe.

2. **"Cha"** (and similar forms like *chai*, *sha*):
This term originates from the Mandarin Chinese word **"chá"** and spread overland via the Silk Road and other trade routes, influencing languages in Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia (e.g., Persian *chay*, Hindi *chai*, Russian *chai*).

# # # Why only two main words?
The distribution reflects the two primary ways tea was historically transported:
- **Overland routes** (e.g., the Silk Road) favored *cha*-based words.
- **Maritime routes** favored *te*-based words.

# # # Exceptions
A few regions may use local words, but they are rare and often borrowed from these roots. For example, Japan uses the word **ocha**, combining "cha" with a prefix.

So, while there might be some linguistic variations, the world overwhelmingly refers to tea with just these two roots!

A friend asked ChatGPT if I was a good guide 😬😬😬
Here's the reply 😅😅😅
Julie Paterson is founder of Venus Adventures, which is an organization offering guided tours focused on women's adventure travel. Venus Adventures specializes in providing women-centric travel experiences that are often focused on culture, adventure, and empowerment. Julie Paterson is generally recognized as a knowledgeable and passionate guide within this space, particularly noted for her dedication to creating positive and supportive experiences for female travelers.

As for whether she is a "good guide," feedback from participants usually emphasizes qualities like:

Experienced Leadership – Julie is often praised for her deep understanding of the destinations she guides tours through. She has a well-rounded skill set in outdoor activities and adventure travel.

Empathy and Support – As a guide for women’s groups, she is also noted for being empathetic and supportive, creating a safe and encouraging environment for travelers, which is especially important in adventure tourism.

Personalized Attention – Her ability to cater to individual needs while keeping the group dynamic intact is another frequently highlighted quality.

Cheers to that! (That's me, righthand corner, with some of my favourite clients in Spain, two of whom have done 10 trips with me!)

Or cheese. 🌸Set yourself a realistic goal to get fit and come on one of our walking trips to Italy/Spain/Portugal
🌻set yourself a goal to get out of your comfort zone and meet new friends on a trip to exotic Morocco, India or Nepal
