An Epic day for Africa in Paris. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo the fastest qualifier for the men’s 200 metres final and Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga wins a bronze medal in the men’s 400 metres. Letsile lost his beloved Mum Seratiwa only in May and looked laser focused in the semi final victory over Noah Lyles, the raging favourite. Perhaps not anymore. “It’s important for the African continent because now people start to realise what the African continent is.” Letsile told reporters. 🇧🇼 🇿🇲 Now to turn a red letter day into gold for LT.

It’s always an absolute treat to see Africa’s Painted Wolf, the second most endangered predator species on the African continent. Brad and his repeat safari guests were privileged to spend time with this pack over two consecutive days.

We don’t advise you grab a cheese grater and scrub it up and down your arm, but that might be some indication of what the tongue of a lion might feel like, covered as it is
with these extraordinarily sharp barbs called filiform papillae.
Without chefs and waiters in the bush to prepare your food and remove the hair, or the tastiest morsels from the bone, the big cat’s tongues are like an all purpose kitchen utensil.
A superb pic from Rob of this big male in South Luangwa National park in Zambia.

Next March Epic’s one and only will again be guiding his hugely popular adventure to Northern India in search of magnificent snow leopards … and all the extraordinary landscapes, wildlife and cultural experiences that go with it. There is also the option of adding time in India’s unique national parks to the south to add another great cat to your bucket list. Rob captured these beautiful images on his trip earlier this year. You can contact us via email if you’re interested in joining him. [email protected]

With a couple of committed bike riders within the Epic ranks, there is a lot of attention on each year.

On Stage 3 into Turin this week, Biniam Girmay from tiny Eritrea on the Red Sea, made history, crossing the line
first in a packed sprint. As significant and emotional a victory and aftermath as the great race has seen.

“I just want to thank my family, my wife, all the Eritreans, and Africans, we must be proud, now we are really part of the big races, now it’s our moment, our time. I just want to say congrats to all my whole team, because we didn’t have a victory yet [in the Tour de France]. But now is our moment, I’m super-happy. This win is for all Africans, congrats, I’m just super happy today.” Biniam Girmay.

We all love Africa here at Epic. Half our team live on the great continent.
This is an extraordinary, life changing achievement for an amazing young man. Biniam will inspire so many more with his heroics and against the odds stage win this week.

Leaf tailed gecko found in the rainforests of Madagascar. The master of camouflage. Such an incredible diversity of endemic wildlife in this place. Guess that’s what happens when you have been isolated from the rest of the world for 160 million years.

Brad and Annie have spent the past three days down on the Mandrare River in southern Madagascar. This place is home to numerous species of lemur, including the ring tailed lemur (aka King Julian), Verreaux’s sifaka, the sportive lemur and the spotted mouse lemur. They also gained exposure to some very traditional agrarian culture. An amazing, engaging country.

Brad is presently on safari in Madagascar, the world’s 4th largest island. Isolated from the other continents for around 90 million years, Madagascar is unmatched for its endemism. Chief among its unique species are lemurs and chameleons. Amazingly it houses 112 species of lemur. Brad has spent the first part of his safari in the central east of the island. Here are a few images of the wildlife experience so far.

Brad and Annie just walked the Pondo Trail with a group of friends. The Pondo Trail is on the wild coast of South Africa (south of Durban down Port Edward way) over 4 nights/ 5 days. It is an amazing coastal walk made all the more special by its isolation. Miles and miles of unspoilt beaches with no one on them. The vistas were incredible.

In praise of doggos.
In a week that delivered us World Environment day, here’s to the endangered but beautiful and charismatic African wild dogs, Painted dogs, Cape Hunting dogs, Painted Wolves, whatever you’d like to call them.
Their last strongholds are Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia. Estimated numbers are between 6 and 7,000 dogs - or approximately 700 remaining packs. These are precarious figures for a creature that has an enormous home range.
To see pups come out of their den in late winter light, to witness the deep bonds between pack members, to experience a pack flying through the bush chasing an impala or puku, these are the great moments of an Epic safari. Long may they roam and run.

It’s multiple mega cute Monday. Some truly intimate and beautiful photographs from on one of his memorable Southern Serengeti safaris in the wildebeest calving season earlier in the year.
Seeing this magnificent large male and the tenderness afforded to his offspring is very touching I think. There are around 3000 lions in the greater Serengeti system and with the abundant food source and plentiful rains this season, it was a bumper crop on all counts.

Sam has an incredible eye for a photograph as well. Sam can help you plan and guide your next Epic safari. Some weekend inspiration as you contemplate where ! 🙂 africa

Today marks the sixth anniversary of Brad’s own significant private journeys achievement. Just after 4am on May 20, 2018 he became the 5,129th person to reach the summit of Mt Everest. Sir Edmund being the first. For the statistically minded that’s all 8,849 metres of it.
It was the fruition of a great deal of planning and preparation. A long and meticulous process. Needless to say Annie and the girls were pretty happy when the news filtered back to Australia that his small party had made it to the summit and of course most importantly made it back to safety and base camp.
None of it would have been possible without the incredible Nepalese team on the ground. Humble, resilient, extraordinary people. A photo credit and then some must go to another remarkable human being in who has written her own history with the mountain. A true legend of the Himalayas. Of course you can come with us anytime to Everest Base camp to meet Lok and all the great characters who have guided Epic clients over the years.

National Endangered Species Day.
Brad staring in awe as we all were at a beautiful pangolin at Mana Pools in Zim on our walk and canoe trek all of 15 years ago.
Incredibly rare to see them in the wild like this, even more so now, trafficked as they are in such vast numbers.
A pause for reflection today on the species we have lost and those stand to lose in the years ahead.
We can and must each do something to help arrest the decline and the course we are on.

Friday was international leopard day. Better late than never.
The most perfectly formed creatures. Survivors in some of the most unlikely environments across different continents. Photos from Brad, Rob, Simon and Sam’s incredible international awards nominated photograph of one of the famous black leopards of the Laikipia plateau in Kenya.

Another half concealed critter. There’s a theme developing here. But this scaly little wonder caused a big commotion for all of us in the Magkadigkadi pans not far from Jack’s camp. A pangolin of course, rare, precious, very much alive and oblivious to the fate that has befallen her species and title as the most trafficked wild mammal in the world. Just a thrill to encounter one where it belongs.
