The colours of Ethiopia. The Kara (Karo) tribe of the Omo Valley. Both women and men are renowned for this exquisite body and face painting. They use chalk, ochre, charcoal and minerals in their daily lives. Small in number, the Kara people make a visit to the stunning Omo Valley a must for the adventurous traveller.

One of those moments on a safari where your heart races, your camera goes up and you hold your breath until you almost pass out ! A stunning capture from in Zambia last year. A leopard mum moves her cub to a new hideout. A few seconds later she has disappeared, you breathe again and shake your head with your guests at the wonder of it all. It never ever gets old that feeling.

The mighty Omo River in south-western Ethiopia. Bringing life to a dry land. Images from Brad’s recent safaris in this extraordinary country. Including the explosion of colour from carmine bee-eaters nesting in the cliff-like banks.

Another outstanding season in Antarctica has come to a close and it’s a big stretch through the winter months ahead. If it’s on your bucket list still, we would love to help you get there with some very exciting plans and our partner launching a new luxury ship in the next couple of years. Now is as good a time as any to lock that big adventure to the White continent into place.

We hope you can step off and have a relaxing weekend. Just lion around if that works.

As poignant a photograph as you will see of an Ethiopian wolf. Life on the edge. Literally, especially when total numbers are down under 450. In the stunning Bale mountains this pup catches the last rays of the sun. We desperately hope she and her species have a viable future. A fantastic shot from Brad on his recent safari.

On a weekend that celebrates International Women’s Day, here’s to the legendary Ingela Jansson who founded Kope Lion in 2011. Ingela works at one of the most challenging junctions in conservation, improving coexistence between humans and wildlife. How can the local Maasai people benefit from not simply maintaining, but increasing lion numbers in the Ngorongoro Conservation area in Tanzania? The 3 goals are to reduce conflict, increase tolerance and safeguard and monitor lion populations. Ingela and her incredible team have won the respect of the people through tireless, evidence based work, listening to the livestock herders, engaging with communities and always having empathy. Epic has been a long time supporter of Ingela and we’d love someday for you to meet her in Tanzania and hear the Kope Lion story. We see one of our big roles at Epic as helping our guests understand the complex, sometimes heartbreaking, ultimately rewarding job of the conservation of these iconic species and the biodiversity of the systems that support them.

An iconic and magnificent image from on his recent family safari to East Africa. Sam and Ro and the girls had this beautiful part of the Serengeti to themselves in the late afternoon when they saw this girl pop her head up out of the long grass. As good as it gets this and why we all love Africa deep into our bones at Epic.

United Nations World Wildlife Day. We could have put up a thousand images here. It matters. To protect and sustain what we have. To commit to a future which doesn’t come at the expense of precious species we share the planet with. It all matters.

Brad is on a second pass in the Ethiopian high country to see Ethiopian wolves and what a day he and Annie and the Epic guests have had. It warms the heart to see a next generation of pups coming through, especially given there are less than 450 Ethiopian wolves in the wild. Magnificent creatures that deserve a future with many many generations to come. The raising of the youngsters is a job for the entire pack.

After a couple of brutal years of a big dry, decent rain has finally come to much of Southern Africa in the past couple of months. Some of the great rivers have swollen, water holes have filled up and humans and animals have let out a sigh at last. The landscape has changed dramatically, even in places like the Central Kalahari in Botswana. Beautiful, life giving rains. The green season is one of our favourite times of year in the bush, which apart from a few places, remains very much open for business.

The Gelada looks like it was fashioned by a class of 8 year old kids, with an almost impossibly extravagant, flamboyant costume, before an hour with the gel and the hair dryer to finish it off. In reality, it’s an “old-world” monkey, not a baboon, exclusively resident of the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia, hanging out in sometimes extraordinary numbers, a thousand and more strong, At that size they even call it, a herd of Gelada. Brad and the small hand picked Epic herd were lucky to spend a few hours in the company of these resplendent creatures, up around 3,000 metres. A spectacular and dramatic setting, befitting such a beautiful animal as this. The stunning chest blaze has earned them the name, bleeding-heart monkey. The larger, more colourful males weigh up to about 18 kg. Gelada also have a diet that is 90% grass, not always easy to find at this altitude, but being up here does mean there is less predation and the majority of babies will reach adulthood. Humans of course also covet the grasslands, even up here and the Gelada, like so many species around the planet, is under threat from the burgeoning agricultural demands of people. The humans in this case, the ones with the cameras that is, could not believe how chilled the monkeys were in their presence. What a world travel opens up.

Ethiopia was one of the early adopters of Christianity in the 4th century. Lalibela in the dry north of the country, is home to one of the world’s most remarkable holy sites, exquisite churches carved from rock. It was King Lalibela, born in the late 12th century, who wanted to build a “New Jerusalem” and these magnificent churches are part of his legacy, visited by pilgrims from all over the world. Brad has been joined by Annie and wonderful new Epic guests for a second exciting Ethiopian adventure. They started their journey with a peaceful and memorable, candle lit dawn service at Lalibela. Brad’s fabulous images capture the atmosphere perfectly.
