An iconic and magnificent image from on his recent family safari to East Africa. Sam and Ro and the girls had this beautiful part of the Serengeti to themselves in the late afternoon when they saw this girl pop her head up out of the long grass. As good as it gets this and why we all love Africa deep into our bones at Epic.

United Nations World Wildlife Day. We could have put up a thousand images here. It matters. To protect and sustain what we have. To commit to a future which doesn’t come at the expense of precious species we share the planet with. It all matters.

Brad is on a second pass in the Ethiopian high country to see Ethiopian wolves and what a day he and Annie and the Epic guests have had. It warms the heart to see a next generation of pups coming through, especially given there are less than 450 Ethiopian wolves in the wild. Magnificent creatures that deserve a future with many many generations to come. The raising of the youngsters is a job for the entire pack.

After a couple of brutal years of a big dry, decent rain has finally come to much of Southern Africa in the past couple of months. Some of the great rivers have swollen, water holes have filled up and humans and animals have let out a sigh at last. The landscape has changed dramatically, even in places like the Central Kalahari in Botswana. Beautiful, life giving rains. The green season is one of our favourite times of year in the bush, which apart from a few places, remains very much open for business.

The Gelada looks like it was fashioned by a class of 8 year old kids, with an almost impossibly extravagant, flamboyant costume, before an hour with the gel and the hair dryer to finish it off. In reality, it’s an “old-world” monkey, not a baboon, exclusively resident of the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia, hanging out in sometimes extraordinary numbers, a thousand and more strong, At that size they even call it, a herd of Gelada. Brad and the small hand picked Epic herd were lucky to spend a few hours in the company of these resplendent creatures, up around 3,000 metres. A spectacular and dramatic setting, befitting such a beautiful animal as this. The stunning chest blaze has earned them the name, bleeding-heart monkey. The larger, more colourful males weigh up to about 18 kg. Gelada also have a diet that is 90% grass, not always easy to find at this altitude, but being up here does mean there is less predation and the majority of babies will reach adulthood. Humans of course also covet the grasslands, even up here and the Gelada, like so many species around the planet, is under threat from the burgeoning agricultural demands of people. The humans in this case, the ones with the cameras that is, could not believe how chilled the monkeys were in their presence. What a world travel opens up.

Ethiopia was one of the early adopters of Christianity in the 4th century. Lalibela in the dry north of the country, is home to one of the world’s most remarkable holy sites, exquisite churches carved from rock. It was King Lalibela, born in the late 12th century, who wanted to build a “New Jerusalem” and these magnificent churches are part of his legacy, visited by pilgrims from all over the world. Brad has been joined by Annie and wonderful new Epic guests for a second exciting Ethiopian adventure. They started their journey with a peaceful and memorable, candle lit dawn service at Lalibela. Brad’s fabulous images capture the atmosphere perfectly.

This is Ash. Always smiling always positive on her family safari in Botswana. Makgadikgadi pans. Green season. Stunning colours and skies everywhere. You’d probably be smiling too with a beautiful male Kalahari lion strolling past your vehicle. But we’re also posting this for the smart phone message. Many of our guests have serious mirrorless or dslr cameras and lenses. But if you’re set up with a long lens and an animal comes from nowhere into close range, your smart phone can be the “go to” for ensuring you get the shot, or the video, or both. Indeed such is the quality of these phones today, a lot of people just choose them for the safari. You may not get your big sunset close up like a 300mm lens will deliver, but you will have an all purpose camera for your lifetime memories.

There are less than 500 of these exquisitely beautiful creatures remaining in the highlands of Ethiopia. The total population of Ethiopian wolves. This week after the extraordinary cultural riches of the Omo Valley, Brad has had the privilege of spending time in the presence of Africa’s most endangered carnivore. They were the only guests in this part of the Bale Mountains, afforded a lengthy, quite overwhelming and emotional sighting with this pack. The steady march of agriculture, the waves of disease like canine distemper, have inflicted a terrible toll on this species. More to come in the days ahead on this unique safari and country.

A dispatch from Brad on the adventure of a lifetime in Ethiopia. Enough signal to get some more images through and this wonderful message below. That is some greeting at the airstrip!

“We’ve concentrated the last few days on the culture of the Omo Valley, deep in the wilderness of Ethiopia’s south-west, interacting with 4 tribes of the Omo: the Mursi, the Kara, the Hamer and the Dassanach. These tribes originated in the north and are of either Semitic or Cush*tic origin. They’re still living a very traditional existence in the same way they have for generations. Cattle are the measure of their wealth although they do farm the riverbanks with subsistence crops of mostly sorghum. We’ve traced the Omo River for its last 200 or so kilometres. Yesterday we boated the last section of the river where it enters into Lake Turkana. Whilst the landscapes are spectacular it’s the people that are the focus of the journey in this incredibly remote part of the world. The “coming of age” ceremony for boys and girls, we had the privilege of witnessing, is the most amazing cultural experience of my 30 years travelling across Africa. It’s comforting that the world is still not yet totally homogenised. Long may it stay this way? Perhaps a naive wish!
Go well everyone, Brad.”

Brad is currently with guests in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley on what even he is describing as a mind-blowing, epic adventure. His first time in this remarkable place and its unique cultural and tribal riches. Each day stunning images and scenes that catapult us back in time.

Friendship. Into the weekend and thinking of those people from afar who have impacted our lives. For Brad, Lok is right up there, an outstanding Nepalese trekking guide and great mate, with a friendship between the two that goes back to the origins of Epic. As the winter thaw comes ever so slowly to the northern hemisphere, it’s also a time to think about and pay tribute to the spirit of the Himalayas. Still very chilly in the Khumbu Valley in February, but beautiful big blue skies and the hint of spring at hand greet those who might head there in the shoulder season. Here’s to long distance friendships and the irrepressible people of Nepal.

You just never know what’s around the next corner on a game drive. If you don’t look up, you can miss some gems. A green season special from guiding a lovely family in Botswana just a few weeks ago. A young female leopard poses on a branch, with the elegance only a leopard possesses, checking out the giraffe herd just 30 metres away. Even time for photographs with the leopard in focus and then the giraffe. She stayed around for a portrait that is simply divine, with the colour pop that is such a dramatic contrast to the muted yellows, oranges and browns of the dry.

Some of you have been lucky to travel with Epic guide over the years, whose passion for Africa runs deep. He’s currently on safari in Kenya with wife Ro, showing their two beautiful daughters Kenya’s wildlife and cultural riches. The highlight of their trip so far arrived in magnificent Amboseli National Park, in the form of the gentle giant, super-tusker Craig. Now into his early 50’s, Craig has probably the largest tusks of any living elephant. This ironically in a week when Amboseli sadly lost another ageing giant, Paolo, to natural causes thankfully. Paolo was 46, so we hope Craig still has some years left for Epic safari guests to see him. They are small in number now these big tuskers, around 20 remain in the wild, hunted for their ivory relentlessly over the years. We hope when Ro and Sam’s girls grow up they might be able to do the same with their children and take them to Kenya to see the progeny of Craig and Paolo and others. Two African icons, Craig and Mt Kilimanjaro in the first image

Not everything in the world is black and white, not even zebras. Friday was International zebra day, so we simply couldn’t let the weekend pass without acknowledging this iconic species, so critical to the ecology of the wild places in Africa. Hardy, feisty and resilient, zebras are such a joy to see and photograph on any safari. These stunning pics from on his recent trip with a great family to the Makgadikgadi pans in Botswana. From above the shallow salt pans sparkling with recent rains and from the game drive vehicle, zebras are a compelling and beautiful subject with those unmistakable markings. Long may they graze.
