In the spirit of Mark Twain's magnificent words.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness."
Looking back on an epic 2024 with Epic Private Journeys
Thanks to everyone who entrusted us with their safari and adventure plans and those in particular who've been with us for the entire ride since 2003.
It's the connection with wilderness, nature and above all, people in far off lands, that makes travel such a balm for the soul. A look back here at the past 12 months of Epic travels to some of the great wilderness destinations. Such wisdom in the young people who gave us the time to talk about their lives and their passion and pride for their country. Come with us to meet them soon.

Sunrise and moon rise over Karanga camp. Elevation 4,040 metres on the slopes of iconic Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. These stunning photos were captured by our own this weekend as he and a great little team are setting out for the summit early this week. The top of Kili, the roof of Africa is at 5,895 metres or 19,340 ft. Climb high, sleep low. The mantra. We wish them all a safe passage for the journey, in the very best of hands with Dr Rob and the amazing porters.

This week marked 63 years of independence from colonial rule for our beloved Tanzania. A kaleidoscope of colours, woodlands and savannas and of course Kilimanjaro, the roof of Africa, gazing down on all that beauty below. The migration, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Tarangire, the Rift Valley, the hospitality, the heartbeat of East Africa. If you haven’t been to TZ, talk to us and we will prepare the most memorable and magical of safaris.

Going back over the last year many highlights of course. For me (Simon here) one of them was being in Tanzania on a 'famil' and driving around the Ngorongoro Crater rim in spectacular rains. When they cleared the baboons had a field day. With Patrick behind the wheel this was the largest troop either of us had ever seen.

The simple joys of the unexpected. Not a standard Epic post this, but a short story on the small delights of travel ... and dogs. The island of Chiloe in Chile has some authentic and wonderful cultural delights. On a recent ‘famil’, our little group dropped by this extraordinary place, where a team of highly skilled craftsmen are still doing what their predecessors have done for a hundred plus years. Building beautiful hand-crafted, wooden vessels. We were transported by the sights and smells of the old weathered dockside building, with oysters and mussels literally under your feet. In a time of computer generated everything, traditions kept alive across generations shape these exquisite boats that ply the waters of the vast archipelago. Every day, the men are joined in their work by their Disney-esque doggo companion, with the un-Disney (but lovely!) name of ... Michelle. 🙂
Michelle isn’t even owned by any of the sea faring fellas. She belongs to one of the neighbours. Michelle just loves hanging out with the guys each day, greeting them at sunrise, getting pats and treats and watching the world go by. She won all our hearts. On the last day we had the pleasure of climbing aboard one of their stunning creations, the Williche (in the last photograph). Travel and dogs. All of us at Epic are passionate about both. The end.

It’s the time of year when we start to think of gifts for family and friends. Some ideas and suggestions here to steer you to projects and initiatives that we either support directly, or we know are doing amazing work in educating kids, building communities and helping protect wilderness areas. Your purchase or your money can have a significant impact. Better still, you might even kick start a meaningful lifetime attachment to conservation or education projects with your kids. Presents with purpose. Education we know is intrinsically tied to conservation, while employment generated by the protection of wildlife is the very foundation for a viable long term future for the national parks and wilderness areas we love. Of course an Epic Private Journeys safari remains a gold standard means of sustaining these precious eco systems and supporting people and wildlife.
There are some incredible organisations here. For gifts especially, Mulberry Mongoose, based in Zambia, are outstanding. Some dodgy MM models in these images, well one dodgy model.

On international cheetah day. Can the fastest land animal outrun the threat of extinction. Between the leopard in our last post and the cheetah, it’s a toss up which is the most beautiful cat. But with only about 7,500 left in the wild, time and mainly space are running out for cheetahs. The facts of cheetah cub mortality say it’s more than likely these 2 cubs would no longer be roaming the southern Serengeti as we found them. We sure hope they survived. If you’ve been lucky to see one on safari you will never forget these precious cats.

South Luangwa National Park thankfully remains a stronghold for leopards. This magnificent fellow was stalking his prey in a gully and came up for a perfect late afternoon pose in front of our vehicle. nailed the snap. What a noble creature he is, but the warthog slipped away.

With a spectacular backdrop, two male guanacos in brutal combat in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile. To prevent your opponent from mating with females, the first rule of fight club is - there are no rules. So the main focus is to bite the other guy on the testicles. Los Cojones 🎱 🥎 or if you want to really lean into your high school Spanish slang, the huevos. Personally, I think the whole thing is below the belt. 😳😬

What a sweetie. With the rains in the Serengeti system ramping up already, the migration has moved to the south, as zebra and wildebeest prepare for the synchronised calving season. But if the grasses are good, I guess there’s no time like the present. Note the beautiful brown stripes that the foals are born with. They will darken with age, just like Mum’s in the second image. Epic guests have front row seats each year for this grand stage, the greatest show on earth.

From the Andes to the Amazon, Peru has incredible biodiversity and cultural riches. Be it fine dining in Lima or trekking into Machu Picchu, it’s a feast for the senses. Our Director of operations Heather, has just been on a fabulous ‘famil’ to Peru, looking at new and existing product, the very best places to send our wonderful Epic guests. One of the highlights for Heather was seeing a Pachamama ceremony (Mother earth), of immense significance to the indigenous people of the Andes. Sloths and anacondas one day, llamas (sacred to the incas) and Andean condors the next. There is beautiful and historic Cusco, nestled at 3,400 metres (11,000 ft) and so much more to see and do in Peru. Oh yes and would you be as brave as Heather? Hint …. Arachnid image ahead. 😳😁 Perhaps the pan flutes of Peru are calling you in 2025.

The leopard is a natural up and down and in trees. Not so the lion. But it’s not uncommon to see lions using trees to improve the view or escape the heat and biting insects. And when and if you do, have that camera ready, because anything can happen. was fully prepped for this beautiful male coming down from his perch in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Classic dry season light and super pics.

You get the feeling that from a very early age a lion cub figures nothing is going to come easy in life. When you move dens there is no U-Haul or removalists. It’s just Mum and those freaking sharp teeth picking you up by the neck and off you go! 😬 A fantastic series of pics from on an amazing Botswana safari with some great clients. I think all of us can relate to the last image. Ouch Mum … could you just get a damn mouthguard or something!! 🦁

If Chile is not on your bucket list destination at the moment, maybe have a look at changing that going into the new year. It’s a stunning and easily accessible country with a mostly South Pacific shoreline, the Andes running north-south throughout, good skiing, vast grasslands, the land of gauchos and guanacos, condors and culture, pumas and Patagonia. Oh yeah ... and pisco sours! 🍸 The food is fantastic, the vistas extraordinary, the hospitality as good as it gets and for many Epic clients, Chile is neatly rolled into an Antarctica holiday, as the fly out point is Punta Arenas at the southern tip of the country. It’s just 2 and a half hours to Antarctica flying over the Drake Passage. We think you should put Chile on your 2025 Epic destinations radar.

After 2 long and extremely challenging days Brad and the crew are safely back from reaching the summit of the famed Ama Dablam peak in Nepal. One of the most challenging experiences of his life I think it can be said. The first person he paid tribute to for the achievement was the young Sherpa who helped him every step of the way. His name is Lhakpa and at 23 he has already summited Everest 3 times. Congratulations to everyone for such an extraordinary effort. Thanks to the amazing sherpas for their courage, resilience and great spirit. Here are some images to make your palms sweat. Sheesh.

Brad and his small group all made the summit of Island Peak over the weekend - well up over 6000 metres as a prelim to taking on the beautiful and challenging Ama Dablam later this week. Weather permitting of course. Wishing them all safe passage from here at sea level!
