The Scottish Highlands and the Appalachians are the same mountain range, once connected as the Central Pangean Mountains. Remnants of this massive mountain range include the Appalachian Mountains of North America, the Little Atlas of Morocco, Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, and part of Greenland and Scandinavia.

Who knew the Appalachian Mountains played a part in the Southwest Ohio area?

This is from the ODNR website, “Cowan Lake lies near the Cincinnati Arch, an uplifting of bedrock that occurred during the Appalachian Mountains’ building process. The erosion of this arch in the Cowan region exposes fossil-rich limestone. The limestone near Cowan and other parts of the exposed arch, including nearby Caesar Creek State Park, are some of the most famous fossil hunting fields in the world.”

We enjoyed the day here fishing while parked facing the lake, backed up to these pine trees and shaded by the huge Tulip Poplars between the parking lot and the lake.

I can see us spending many more days here.
