Church bells 🔔 at The Church of the Dormition at Vardzia - the spiritual focus of the site. The ‘secco’ paintings inside the church indicate links to the Byzantine world and a little tunnel leads to a cold water pool - the tears of Queen Tamar 👸 💦 -

The walking in this region is wonderful - but challenging - with multiple daily ascents/descents over snowy passes, crossing rivers and streams, descending into vertiginous ravines, along knife edge ridges, and bashing through dense muddy forests. The weather shone, thundered and poured but beyond the odd shepherd not a soul did we see for 5 days. Magical sunsets like this.

Elguja Morgoshia prepares a cauldron of ‘elarji’ for a late breakfast one morning. A Mingrelian recipe made with maize, corn flour and cheese from his cows and goats, it was quite delicious spread out hot on a bench in his hut, and accompanied with his home made ‘matsoni’ (fresh yoghurt). Elguja is one of the last cow herdsman in the region, spending the summer months in the mountains before trekking them back down to Poti on the coast.

First night camp on an epic 6 day trek around Tobavarchkhili (Silver) lakes in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of NW Georgia. This is Lake Okhoje at 2550m - one of the most picturesque lakes where a guardian angel rock formation keeps watch. Turn the pic sideways for multiple faces: 🐵 👽 👵🏽

A rare glimpse of Mt Ushba at dusk from . Although it doesn’t rank in the 10 highest peaks of the Caucasus range, Ushba (4710m) is known as the “Matterhorn of the Caucasus” for its spire-shaped double summit. It’s considered one of the most difficult ascents by mountaineer’s due to its steep profile and unstable weather, alongside plenty of myths and legends too. So compelling. One day.. 🏔️

Tushetian food is some of the best in Georgia - these were two standout meals :

Kotori- Tushetian cheese bread. This one is oozing ‘erbo’ - clarified butter, and was quite delicious. Also
‘Chishdvari’ -hot corn bread with cheese inside. And
‘badrigani nigvzit’ - aubergine and walnut rolls.

Fried ‘soko’ (mushrooms) with sour cream
Salad with blueberry sauce (skinned tomatoes )

Tushuri shepherd with his pup leading a horse laden with guda - skins of sheep, goat or calf that guda cheese is made in. The cheese 🧀 has no crust , its dense but elastic and very salty. More from our walk in Stories.
