Ready to experience the magic of film at Fest 2024? 🎬 With a rich tradition, explore conceptual novelties through Fest Focus and Dreamlike Film sections. Get ready for an unforgettable experience!

 

This year's Fest brings certain conceptual novelties, embodied in two programme sections, Fest Focus and Dreamlike Film, which each contain eight films.

 

The first FEST, under the slogan “A Brave New World“ was opened on the 9th of January 1971 in Dom Sindikata, with the screening of Robert Altman’s Mash. Envisioned as the annual review of the best films of the season, the Belgrade International Film Festival - FEST – evolved to become one of the most important festivals on the continent and a pillar event of Belgrade's cultural life and an indispensable element in the coming of age of many generations of film fans. Today, nearly five decades after its first edition, FEST continues to fulfil its cultural and educational role with the same energy, broadening the horizons of all film fans.

The first FEST was quite spectacular, featuring “A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick; Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider“; the already mentioned “Mash” by Robert Altman; the films by Eric Rohmer, Louis Bunuel, Živojin Pavlović... Although many nostalgically, but rightfully so, consider this first edition of the Festival to be unmatched, the truth is that in the years that followed, FEST presented its audiences with many opportunities to see the films that have later been counted among the best in film history.

🌳 Botanical Garden Jevremovac located in the center of Belgrade, hidden between busy city streets, it represents an oasis of peace and vegetation. In this garden, visitors will be able to see plants atypical for this region, some of which are real natural rarities.

The Botanical garden in Belgrade was founded in 1874 thanks to the initiative of the famous scientist and professor Josif Pančić who was also its first director. The jewel of the garden is certainly the green house that was built in 1892. At that time this building was renowned not only for its importance for the botany, but also for its beauty and unique architectural solutions. Sadly, over the years this building lost its shine. However, in 2014, the reconstruction was finished, in which great attention was paid not to change the original look and architecture of the greenhouse building. Thanks to the restoration, in the center of Belgrade visitors may enjoy a walk through beauty and fragrances of different plants or through deserts or rainforests of the tropical areas. Within the premises of the garden, there is also the building of the Botanical Institute with its large herbarium and a library with some 13,000 books. Maybe, the main attraction of the Botanical Garden in Belgrade is the Japanese Garden which was designed to blend in with the surrounding areas of the garden. This section of the garden was constructed in order to introduce to visitors the art of creating Japanese gardens together with the culture and tradition of Japan. The wooden bridges, water surfaces, carefully placed plants and rocks, will allow you at least for to moment to imagine you are in the far lands of the rising sun.

the most important historical and cultural sites in Belgrade. It is located in the historic city center. It was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and it is protected by the Republic of Serbia. The Belgrade Fortress offers an exciting view of the confluence of Sava and Danube, of New Belgrade and Zemun. The Kalemegdan Park contains the "Cvijeta Zuzorić" Pavilion, the Grand Stairway, the zoo, children's park and a number of monuments and sculptures, several sports courts, a museum, a café and a restaurant. The ideal spot to escape from the hectic vcity center while remaining in the same city center. It's an oasis of peace, ideal for sports, relaxing, yoga, or just long nice walks.

Christmas in Belgrade: attractions and activities

If you're looking for a budget-friendly place to spend the festive period that celebrates in full swing but also has traditions that you might not find in other European capitals, head to Belgrade!

Here are some of the best things to do in the city throughout the festive period:

* Take a stroll through "Knez Mihailova" street and visit the Christmas markets (The whole street gets covered in beautiful Christmas decorations, from overhead lights to giant present houses and of course, an enormous Christmas tree that sits at the very center of the street.)

* Try ice skating at the "Pionir" Ice Hall. (Besides exploring the city and enjoying its delicious food, you may want to keep yourself active and try some winter sports! It's the biggest indoor ice rink in the country and has top-tier conditions for ice skating. It works in the evening hours so you can end your day with a dose of this beautiful winter activity.

* Visit the "Street of an Open Heart" (It takes place every year on the 1st of January on "Svetogorska" street and has been going on for over 40 years. During the event, many artists, musicians, and street animators walk through the street wearing red noses, which are sold for charity. There are also various mini-concerts and games which are mostly made for children.)

* Spend New Year's Eve at Skadarlija that is filled with many fantastic and famous restaurants. They serve traditional Serbian food and the atmosphere is great. You will get to enjoy Serbian cuisine, and experience what a traditional Serbian party looks like. So if you prefer more traditional gatherings, it's a match made in heaven.)

Last weekend Belgrade welcomed the largest and most important Wine Fair in Southeast Europe - Wine Vision by Open Balkan. Second year in a row, Belgrade was the capital of the wine industry in this part of the world, from November 16-19, 2023.

This unique event, founded under the auspices of the Governments of Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania, offered visitors an entirely new wine experience and the opportunity to discover the exciting world of authentic and autochthonous wines of the Western Balkans, as well as those whose geographical indication suggests they are of the best-known wine regions. 20 countries participated with over 350 wineries, which together with distilleries, distributors and traders, various companies and service providers made more than 570 exhibitors.

Belgrade Vibes had the honor to attend the Uzakrota Travel Summit 2023, a travel convention that connects the biggest companies with the brightest minds and professionals in the travel industry worldwide. We had the chance to meet and connect with professionals from the UK, CIS, Balkans, Europe, and the Middle East since there were nearly 600 tourism professionals, and 30 speakers attending the event at the hotel Crowne Plaza Belgrade. Member States of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) today elected Serbia as the host country of the World Expo in 2027.

After four rounds of voting during the BIE’s 172nd General Assembly, a majority of Member States voted for Serbia’s project to organise the next Specialised Expo in the city of Belgrade under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, between 15 May and 15 August 2027.

For centuries Belgrade has been a meeting point among different civilizations and it embraced the best from both, but most importantly in its people and hospitality.
