Just there 5 months ago...so difficult to believe it may not be there again, and the place we parked, and where we stood to take pictures, is already gone.
Last time we were there was almost 18 years ago. Lesson here is don't ever miss an opportunity for travel.

The ever-growing Halema‘uma‘u crater already swallowed the Overlook parking lot and might make the Jaggar Museum unusable.

In the Gila Wilderness (historically, the world's first Wilderness area), sit the remains of one of the Mogollon people's home areas - The Gila Cliff Dwellings. It is believed the Mogollon people used this area for only a few decades before they moved on. Along a beautiful (but sometimes high...so drive carefully) road and down into the canyon, you take a short hike up into the amazing dwellings. Imagine yourself approximately 800 years ago...
Remember: Summer months are VERY warm (90's Fahrenheit). Bring and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Take your time on the hike to the dwellings....TIP: Take the left fork to get to the dwellings and you hike through the forested area where it is shaded and cooler. This way you come back around the loop and back to the parking area after visiting the dwellings on the right side of the fork in the trail - fully exposed to the sun but easier on a downhill hike than hiking uphill.
If you are traveling with a pet you absolutely cannot leave them in your vehicle while you hike to the dwellings (and pets are not allowed on the trails or in the dwellings). The ranger center has "kennels" that are basically cages...they are at least open for your pet to get air, but truly it is better to not bring your pet with you at all in the summer.
