Happy New Years Eve!
Well after a few trips out searching for the White Raven we finally found it. It was fun finally finding it, along with all the raven paparazzi. Now my goal with to try to get some photos of it in a tree or in a tree with berries and flying.
Technically this White Raven is not an albino, rather it appears to suffer from leucism. This condition is slightly different from albinism, which is marked by full white cover and red eyes. This raven has blue eyes, indicative of leucism, a lack of melanin pigments in some or all feathers.
“A white raven is rarer than a black swan,” said Rick Sinnott, a former Anchorage-area wildlife biologist for the State of Alaska. “This is the only time I have ever heard of a white raven or seen pictures of a white raven,” said Riley Woodford, a public information officer with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, of this year’s specimen.
