U.S. Soldiers with the 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade use a water bucket, attached to a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, to extinguish brush fires at Fort Hood. This firefighting capability allows the 28th ECAB to assist and protect people from natural or man-made wildfires. (U.S. Army photo...

Some old and some new Alpha Company members out there fighting firers at Fort Hood TX while gunnery is going on. I usually would say let it burn but this one was quite large. Just yesterday alone the team of two did over 90 drops and 9 combined hours of flying. Back at it again today

One year ago today, Company A 2/104th AVN escaped Afghanistan, but not before a warm send off by the Taliban. Shortly after midnight the rockets started and kept coming for about an hour and a half. The highlight of the evening was when one hit the tent next to us, fortunately that unit moved out earlier in the day.

One year ago today: The ADVON arrives in Bagram on the 17th. The packing continues in TX. The Mainbody will depart 22 and the STRATAIR European tour will head out on the 24th.

Sounds familiar to some

One year ago today: Environmentals commence at Ft. Bliss. VTC with Idaho NG in Bagram, they aren't team players. The ADVON people must drive from Bliss to Hood in order to pack and catch a bus back to Bliss, where they will catch their plane. The bus trip is with a bunch of Med soldiers, behavior health nurses. The 767 takes off at 0030 on 14Jan13, headed for Kyrgystan, with stops at Norfolk Va. and Shannon Ireland.

One year ago today: Southern folk are so hospitable. They knew they had Yankees for New Years day, so they made pork chops and sour kraut. Head colds are making the rounds. Flying to Ft. Bliss for environmental training was cancelled 2 days in a row. A blizzard in El Paso on the 3rd, and the aircraft launched on the 4th only to return, the snow is moving this way. The weather lifts on the 5th and the aircraft launch at noon. The maintenance platoon is enjoying the break in the action with a night out at Chile’s and some bowling.

One year ago today: The end of the 4 day Christmas pass was met with a winter storm. Two extra days and the last of the troops arrives back at North Fort.
1LT S. graduated from the State Police Academy and arrived at the airport only to be swept away to the active duty reception station, like hyenas carrying off a fresh kill, after some hostage negotiations he was recovered to North Fort.

One year ago today: This week looks like everything that could go wrong, did. While battling range fires that we set, a bambi bucket fell out of the sky. 2 spare barrels fell out of the sky. The electric buggy died. A dust storm. A pair of goggles temporarily misplaced. In Top Gun fashion the range tower was buzzed. We obtained 24,000 rounds of blank ammo to practice overlapping fire, our machine guns would not fire them, unfortunately we opened all the cans, creating a turn in nightmare. Christmas leave starts on 23, most are heading home, some are heading to the Bad Lands for some spelunking, some to Galveston for some fishing. A local group of great Americans have invited any soldier remaining to enjoy a Christmas meal with them.

16/12/2013

One year ago today: Gen Gronski and CSM Kepner are in the area to say goodbye to B Co. but really just want to hang out with us. Our Unit Movement Officer must perform some reverse Hudini tricks. Inventory and stuff 40,000 lbs of equipment into triwalls and tricons. Will we need to ship one helicopter to replace a hard landing in theater? SPC B developes and posts the Vipers Aviation page.

One year ago today: Most med, admin and dental has been completed. We have discovered that we have 3 LNOs, green training, blue training and an additional just for admin. Each needs to get their boxes checked but don't seem to talk to each other. They all need similar reports, with like information in different formats. Flight training begins. Pashto and culture class, we lip sync some words and learn that man love Thursdays is part of the custom. The other half of the day was spent at the pit for combatives, man love beat down, think of bruises as a medal of manliness.

One year ago today; Families were saying good byes, aircrews would begin their journey, arriving at "The Great Place", Ft. Hood, TX. on 3 Dec. Maintenence crews will arrive at North Ft. about 2145, today. Other than an explosion of laundry detergent inside a dufflebag, their trip was smooth. Weapons were delivered to the Reserve Center yesterday. The Advon was scrambling to account for and secure them before they closed for the evening. Some of the new things that we have discovered; warm weather, electric buggy, meal cards, giesha, long horns, who snores, USO, MWR.....

Happy Vets day to all the new vets as well as the seasoned ones. An elite category of less than 1% of Americans who sacrificed for this country. This is where it all started
