If you’ve ever wanted to experience space
travel and a sense of just how big our solar
system is, all you need to do is take a drive
to Aroostook County. Northern Maine is the
proud home of the Maine Solar System
Model. Just travel along U.S. Route 1—all
celestial bodies, except the Pluto model
located in the Houlton Tourist Information
Center and the Sun, are visible from the
road. The model extends for nearly 100
miles from the Sun at the University of Maine
at Presque Isle to the dwarf planet Eris in
Topsfield.
If you take in the whole solar system, you’ll
see the Sun, nine planets, seven moons, and
three dwarf planets. Each mile along the
way equals 1 astronomical unit (distance
from the Earth to Sun, or 93 million miles).

The area was named by a British Army chaplain in 1790 who held a service on the Hill and likened it to the hill in Athens dedicated to Mars, where “the Apostle Paul declared the unknown God to the Athenians.”

Travel Maine was in Fort Fairfield in the rain yesterday.
DID YOU KNOW? Fort Fairfield, established to protect the area during the Aroostook War, took its name from Maine Governor John Fairfield. The original fort (1839-1843), a duplicate of Fort Kent, was dismantled in 1862. A replica of the blockhouse was built in 1976 and is located in a small, quiet park just off Main Street.

Blue Hill Maritime Heritage Festival
August 13 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Free
The Downeast Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association is proud to host and help sponsor the Festival. The Blue Hill Maritime Heritage Festival is scheduled for Saturday, August 13, 2022. We are planning a fun summer day by the bay, with a lot of maritime and historical related activities: boats, and boat building demonstrations, art in the park, sea shanties, seafood and more.

Join us next Saturday, June 4 from 10-4 for Super Hero Day at Fort Knox! Come dressed as your favorite hero (or villain). Costumes are welcome but please, no real weapons or dangerous props. Activities best suited for 11 and under but fun for all ages.
The event may be canceled without prior notice and is free with regular park admission fees. More info to come!

Fort Knox is open for the season!
Old Glory went up yesterday signaling Fort Knox Historic Sute is open for the season. O'er the ramparts we watched her broad stripes and bright stars streaming gallantly with the river and Bucksport in backdrop. Wonders to behold!
