I'm here to reassure you; if you can adult, you can solo travel.
The same principles of safety apply when you're traveling alone as they would if you were with your close girlfriends at a local bar.
After a few solo trips, I've learned a few tricks, like keeping a list of common phrases in the destination's native language if you need help that literally saved my life.
Here's my list of the Top 10 Solo Travel Tips for Women:
1. TRUST YOUR GUT
Use common sense and trust your gut. If you arrive at a hotel, and you don't feel safe, leave.
2. RESPECT LOCAL CUSTOMS
If there are certain dress codes in places, like a temple, respect and adhere to it. This can save your life.
3. KEEP BELONGINGS SAFE
Pack 2 travel locks. Make sure your accommodation offers a safe and lock your most important belongings inside and the rest in your suitcase with the second lock.
4. LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE
Drinking impedes good decision-making and situational awareness. If you decide to drink while on vacation, make sure it's not to the point where you can't take care of yourself.
5. TELL OTHERS YOUR LOCATION
Inform family or friends of your travel plans by sharing your itinerary or your location. This way, if something happens, they can take action.
6.ARRIVE IN DAYLIGHT
Try to arrive at a new destination during the day. Cities are easier, safer to navigate, and less intimidating when you can see everything.
7. PRACTICE A SOLO DATE BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
You'll be more comfortable traveling alone abroad after you've done it a few times in your hometown. Try going to dinner or to a museum alone for a similar social experience.
8. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Pay attention to street signs, landmarks, and the faces around you. If you wear headphones, keep one earbud in or turn the volume low.
9. PACK A FIRST AID KIT
Not all places you visit may have immediate medical attention, so carry a fully stocked first aid kit with you at all times.
