Asylum claims from international students in Canada has spiked at an 'unacceptable' rate
Toronto’s Seneca College, where asylum claims from international students increased from 300 in 2022 to almost 700 in 2023, and Kitchener’s Conestoga College, where claims jumped from 106 to 450 during that same period, reports The Canadian Press.
According to CBC, asylum claims from India have increased significantly, with nearly 3,500 claims in 2022 where half of them were accepted compared to 20 claims accepted in 2014.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced in January that Canada would be introducing measures to reduce number of international students due to pressures on housing, health care and services, by capping study permit applications for two years; meaning 360,000 permits in 2024 which is 35 per cent less from 2023.
New students are now required to have higher funds that is at least $20,000 from the previous amount of $10,000.
