What's a "links"?
re: Bandon Dunes Golf Resort
A links is the oldest style of golf course, first developed in Britain. The word "links" comes via the Scots language from the Old English word hlinc : "rising ground, ridge" and refers most often to an area of coastal sand dunes.
Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is a complex of four links and a par-3 golf course, located just north of the city of Bandon, Oregon.
Bandon Dunes was the first course at the resort, which opened in 1999. It was followed by the addition of Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald. The fifth course, Bandon Preserve, is a par-3 short course with 13 holes. Punchbowl is the most recent addition in 2014, featuring a large putting course.
In 2009, Golf Magazine named Pacific Dunes #2 in it's list of the 50 best courses built in the last 50 years. Bandon Dunes was ranked #12 and Bandon Trails notched in at #33.
The nearest airport to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is Bandon State Airport (KS05/S05) in Bandon, Oregon--about a 15 minute transfer to the resort. Small turboprop and multi-engine or single piston-driven private charter airplanes can land there pending weather conditions, which change rapidly due to it's coastal location. The nearest airport that can support jet charter flights is Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (KOTH/OTH) in North Bend, OR.
