According to Hitchwiki The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Hitchhiking the World, women do tend to have the advantage in Queenstown.

Females usually stop for other females. Families, as noted in Hitchwiki, often want to make sure the woman(en) they see hitchhiking is taken to “safety.” Protective parents often show their mama bear and papa bear instincts by helping someone in need such as a harmless looking backpacker.

11 Lessons I Learned About Hitchhiking in New Zealand

Back in 2016, a couple of misfit backpackers – one Italian, one French, and one American (that’s me) – found each other on a campground in Blenheim, New Zealand and traveled around the South Island together sharing stories, wine, and laughter all while practicing each other’s native languages.

11 Lessons I Learned About Hitchhiking in New Zealand

When I arrived in New Zealand two years ago, I soon saw a hitchhiker for the first time in my life. It felt like seeing Marty McFly on the side of the road in a yellow HAZMAT suit plopped into the wrong decade.

“People really do that here?” – were the first words out of my mouth. I quickly came to realize that it’s actually a very common way to travel in this country {without being murdered}.

The Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. Māori originated with settlers from eastern Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages sometime between 1250 and 1300.

New Zealand's Māori culture is an integral part of Kiwi life.

Why the Queen Charlotte Track Should Never Become a Great Walk

Here are 5 quick facts about the Queen Charlotte Track (or QCT)

1. The QCT is nestled in the mountains and coves of Marlborough Sounds, a spectacular region in the northeast corner of New Zealand’s South Island

2. The Marlborough Sounds walk runs 71km long from start to finish – you can start or end in either direction (Anakiwa or Ship Cove)

3. You can walk or mountain bike the whole track or you can do day trips or tours (check out these guys) by boat or by walking in from one end

4. Walking the whole track takes 3-5 days

5. Queen Charlotte Track mountain biking takes 2-3 days

Both Milford and Doubtful Sounds have means of spicing up your trip to the fiords with on and off-ship activities. Depending on how active you are, you can see some parts of the fiordlands from a pretty unique perspective.

Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand. It was originally used by the Māori people in reference to only the North Island but, since the late 19th century, the word has come to refer to the country as a whole.

18/08/2019

With both Milford and Doubtful Sound drawing in hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, it’s no wonder they won awards for coming in first and second for New Zealand’s most popular travel destinations respectively.

This will be a tough one to judge, as popularity could be a benefit or a drawback for you.

Decide for yourself: http://bit.ly/2yGvYsJ

17/08/2019

Doubtful Sound is far more remote and much less accessible than Milford Sound, but that isn’t always a bad thing. Because this naturally hidden gem is 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the nearest inhabited place, Manapouri, it diverts thousands of travelers from laying eyes on its great vistas.

SHOWDOWN: Milford Sound vs. Doubtful Sound

Milford Sound stretches 15 kilometers from its mouth at the Tasman Sea inland to its main departure point at the wharf and tourist center. Some of the fiord’s rock faces tower at 1,200 meters on average with The Elephant standing tall at 1,517 meters and The Lion emerging at 1,302 meters.

Milford has one main cove on the northeastern side and several permanent waterfalls lining the mountainous walls. Most cruises follow a clockwise circular path out and in to give tourists a good look at the natural features adorning the fiord.

An informal way to say ‘hi’ that is very much a part of New Zealand English these days.

In a literal sense, kia ora can be a way to wish someone good health; depending on the inflection, it might also be used to show agreement or say thanks.

Largest delegation of artists and performers to represent New Zealand in Edinburgh

“The sheer number of New Zealand artists heading to Edinburgh this year is testament not only to the entrepreneurial spirit our artists have in bringing their unique Kiwi flair to audiences abroad, but critically, is confirmation of their growth and confidence to operate in the intensely competitive “hot house”; the Edinburgh Fringe."

4 Steps to Settling in Queenstown

The melting pot of nations that comprise Queenstown's local scene is generally made up of Brits & Irish, loads of Brazilians, a hefty amount of Argentinians, a fair few Americans & Canadians, along with many Koreans, Germans, French, Belgians, Italians, and even a few Australians.

In saying all of that, we've all been where you are now and know it's daunting, but moving to Queenstown is one of the best decisions most of us expats here (and even kiwis) have made in our whole lives. You won't regret it!
