PROTECTING OUR NATIONS STORY -We have highlighted the significant differences between a National "Forest" (Managed Use) and "Park" (Preservation) this past month but what about preservation WITHIN managed use areas?

With 154 National Forest Service Areas totaling 193 million acres within the United States, surely there must be SOME areas and sites within the Nations Forests that are preserved...right? YES!!! ⛰

The National Forest Service (NFS) has recorded 380,000+ cultural resources on national forests and grasslands. Cultural resources included are; historical remains/ruins of past cultural groups, ancient Indian villages, rock art, travel route/markers, military forts, homestead cabins, and abandoned mines/mills. All of which collectively provide us with the Story of our Nations land and people. Without preservation of cultural resources, our Nations past, both good and bad, are lost...and vanish forever.

National Forest Services job is two fold:
- MANAGE USE of cultural resources for public USE i.e. enjoyment/education
- PROTECT cultural resources from vandalism, theft, fire, and other threats

Among the several historic preservation laws NFS is directed by and required to adhere, there is one in particular, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, that grants the power and authority to enforce "criminal penalties (felony and misdemeanor) and civil penalties for the unauthorized excavation, removal, damage, alteration, defacement, or the attempted unauthorized removal, damage, alteration, or defacement of any archaeological resource, more than 100 years of age, found on public lands or Indian lands".

Within our very own backyard, tucked in the Dragoon Mountains -Coronado National Forest, we have a site that is not only recorded as a cultural resource by National Forest Service but is also listed on National Park Services National Register of Historic Places!!! (Preservation within Managed Use Area)

While National Forest Services 380,000 recorded cultural resources is great in number, LESS THAN 1% of those recorded cultural resources make it on the National Park Services National Register of Historic Places...and one is right here in our backyard! ⛰

We are all called to respect and protect this very special cultural resource. In doing so we are not only protecting an amazing landscape but we are also protecting the integrity of our Nations Story! 🌎🌍🌏

Feel free to message us for any additional resources relating to this information 🤠

Thanks for joining us to learn more about public lands and the with our series!

CAN YOU NAME THIS NATIONAL REGISTERED HISTORIC SITE IN THE DRAGOON MOUNTAINS????

Cheers to 86 years of national policy to preserve for public use historic sites, buildings, and other objects worthy of preservation.

Enacted on this day, Aug 21, 1935 The Historic Sites Act 🇺🇸

Join us here next week for the conclusion of our series ⛰ in when we will reveal how "Preservation" works WITHIN "Managed Use" areas, tying together all you have learned with us. Hint: THIS 👉🏽The Historic Sites Act 🇺🇸

A FOREST IS BORN -On May 25, 1907, the "Dragoon National Forest" was created with 70,000 original acres by U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt under the Forest Reserve Act of 1891. Less than a year later on July 2, 1908, it was combined with Santa Rita and Santa Catalina National Forests. This consolidation was the first to bear the name, "Coronado National Forest".

Forest Service is the division of government (USDA) that now manages the use of this area for cattle grazing through leases, for camping through camp grounds with facilities/waste receptacles, for timber cutting and recreation with rules and special-use permits.

BIRTH OF THE FOREST -Prior to the "Gadsden Purchase" during 1853-1854 (one of the last MAJOR land purchases for the U.S.) the 25 mile rocky mountain range lay within the boundary of Mexico.

After the U.S. purchased this area of land, the range remained occupied by the Native Chiricahua Apaches and relatively unguarded by U.S. Military until 1856 when U.S. Mail routes and Stage stops began travel through the northern end of "Sierra de la Peñascosa". Now, named "Dragoon Mountains" after four companies of the First Dragoons encamped here for a very brief time before moving on to Tucson. Thus, opening the land for passage, mining operations, and homesteading in 1862.

However, as a result from the cultural clashes between occupying Native American Chiricahua Apaches, settlers/miners, and the U.S. Military, a reservation containing these and the Chiricahua mountains was formed...but the Chiricahua Reservation was short-lived (1872-1876). Thereafter the remaining Apaches were moved to the San Carlos Native American Reservation approximately 100 miles north. Thus, opening the land for homesteaders and mining operations once again.

When the Chiricahua Reservation closed and the Apaches were relocated, a full-scale set of land grabs began within and surrounding the, "Dragoon Mountains". For the next 30 years major land grabs took place on the slopes of and into the very heart of the mountains themselves.

Between late 1876 and 1886: Settlers claimed at least 15 large scale land areas for cattle ranching and farming along the slopes of the mountains to secure long-term investment and profit. Prospectors searching for precious metals laid claim to dozens of mines and tunneled through many of the ranges mountainsides and peaks in hope of achieving more rapid wealth. Woodcutters downed timber from the abundant pine-clad slopes and oak covered oases for instant profit when brought to and sold in Tombstone.

By the 1890s, nature forced many of the former operations to recede scale or cease with a major drought.

However, at the turn of the century, populations began rapidly moving into the mountainous region once again. These were not just homesteaders, mine prospectors, and timber cutters, now visitors came for recreational enjoyment. Visitors came by the thousands each year to camp and experience the spectacular scenery.

Eventually, the overgrazing of large cattle herds over large areas of land, the increased tourist visitation, and the dangers of active mining called for the governments Forest Service to begin managing use of the mountain range.

The entire Coronado National Forest, as we know it today, underwent at least 14 different shifts in government for a span 50 years (1902-1953) and is a consolidation of 9 original National Forests that account for majority of "Sky Islands" in Southern Arizona.

THE CHIRICAHUA RESERVE -Once upon a time, before our backyard was public land and before the names Dragoon or Coronado were associated with them, the 25 mile range were the "Sierra de la Peñascosas" -The Rocky Mountain Range.

The "Sierra de la Peñascosas" served as a great Stronghold for the Chiricahua Apaches for hundreds of years until the near ending of the Native-American Indian wars when the land became a short-lived designated Native American Indian Reservation. The "Chiricahua Reservation" lasted just over 3.5 years between 1872 and 1876 when the people group were ordered to leave. Thus, opening the land to settlers for cattle grazing and mining operations...so what happened next???
