Unity Run Participants’ list of Teachings and Practices
1. All Unity Run Participants WILL bring with them their own dinnerware i.e.: Plate, bowl, cup, spoon and fork. You WILL use these items from the beginning of the Unity Run to the end (no one is going to be exempt from this). By doing so you will eliminate unnecessary trash. You will learn that you have to take care of yourself and not to rely on everything being available for you.
2. All Participants of the Unity Run will adhere to the NO CD Players, iPods/MP3 Players/Listening devices, Cell Phones, Headphones, Portable and hand-held Games, Electronic Gadgets, Weapons, Gang Related Attire, and any other equipment that will distract you from listening to and hearing about our Himdag to be told to us by the elders and adults throughout the run.
3. If you don’t listen and continue being disruptive when told not to, being disrespectful, being wasteful when told not to, continue talking back and don’t do what you are told then you will be sent home and won’t finish the run with the rest of the group. You have to remember that we are teaching you how to be respectful and mindful of your elders to listen and to do what you are told without questioning so that you may learn.
4. All Participants of the Unity Run will be responsible for picking up after themselves and if you see anyone else dropping trash tell them to pick it up.
5. All other Runners waiting on the road will be ever mindful of the traffic and to stay off the road and Do Not leave empty bottles or trash behind.
6. All Participants of the Unity Run will be participating in all the talks and cultural sharing that will be taking place throughout the run (there will be some exceptions).
7. All Participants of the Unity Run will be responsible for their own personal gear, tents (if they have one), bedrolls/sleeping bags, any of their own personal belongings.
8. All Participants of the Unity Run will take only what they can eat and EAT whatever you put on your plate. We encourage everyone to at least eat a little bit of some of the traditional foods that might be served to us during the run – The main thing is DO NOT waste any food, drinks or fruit.
9. All Support Staff Participants will be helping in areas needed, i.e. chopping wood, starting the fire, keeping the fire going, helping the cooks when need be, packing and unpacking the support trailers and vehicles, help put up tents and canopies when need be. You may also be asked to drive a personal vehicle, so come prepared for such incidents.
10. Remember to Thank the cooks, and all those responsible for feeding us and the kihigam for putting us up for the night.
11. Be respectful to all areas we go into. Know not to destroy the vegetation, plants and animals, DO NOT mark or tag any structures/buildings, etc.
12. MALES: Be respectful to everyone especially to all females young and old.
13. Use proper Language at all times and if you hear someone using improper language tell them not to or let one of the adults know and it’ll be dealt with.
14. Don’t be talking loud when someone is talking. We’re all in this together to learn and every word is important – show respect and be respectful to others.
15. When you are told to be quiet and to go to sleep – listen and do what you are asked to do. DO NOT keep talking or questioning, there are others trying to rest for the next day; again, show respect.
16. Be courteous at all times, especially to the host villages, district, communities and Nations.
17. Give help when you see the need. DON’T wait to be asked… HELP each other and those around you.
18. FEMALES (on their moon):
WILL NOT be around the males,
WILL NOT be around or touching the staffs,
WILL NOT be eating with the main group,
A decision by the adult females will determine the status of such females. The main thing:
Showing Respect and Being Respectful to all our ha’ha-jun (Relatives);
through these lands our so’shoni (Ancestors) continues to travel.
