David Brandy is an award-w

inning lens-based artist. Brandy's artistic mantra is, "Beauty can be strange and the strange can be beautiful." His passion as an artist is to present man-altered landscapes with the uncanny – the psychological experience of something strangely familiar. His ongoing series, "Newer Topographics", emphasizes the strong sense of isolation humankind feels due to the juxtaposition of natural landscapes with solitary manmade constructs. Brandy’s work was sort-listed for the 2021 Aesthetica Art Prize with an exhibition at York Art Gallery, UK. He received an Emerging Artists by Emerging Curator Award at the 2019 Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. His art sold over-asking in the Curatorial Collection at SNAP 2019 - Toronto’s premier fine art photography auction. He was a short-listed finalist in both the Quest Art 2018 National Art Prize, and the 2017 Salt Spring National Art Prize. Brandy’s art hangs in his collectors’ residences and in commercial space across North America.

You know how you sometimes think to yourself, “Oh that’s a pipe dream!”

Or worse, someone else tells you, “That’s just a pipe dream.”

Listen to your heart, not your head. Feed your soul. Express your passion. It feels amazing when you do that and it can lead to extraordinary things.

Happy Winter Solstice! I love winter. I find the landscape much more dramatic at this time of year for the newer topographics subject matter I enjoy photographing. The flat light. An unspoiled blanket of snow covering the landscape. This is one of my favourite winter images I’ve taken here in Grey County. “Winter Fog”.

Sometimes ya just gotta throw it back. Like all the way back to 1998, and this shot of my sweet 750cc Honda Magna Deluxe stopped on a lonely stretch of highway in New Mexico. (Pretty sure I had a Canon Sure Shot point-and-shoot film camera on that trip.) I adored the purple and white colour scheme and all that chrome! This was a 30-day solo journey I did from Albuquerque NM to Vancouver BC, at a time when I needed to get away, be on my own, recalibrate, and find a new path and my true creative essence. And that trip did just that for me. Yes, I was a biker boy back then. Still am at heart. Never should have sold that beauty. However, I still find myself riding on two wheels these days, only now it’s human-powered wheels. Although I don’t foresee any 30-day trips in my immediate future! I’ll be happy if I work my way up to a 1-day ride.

On location in Perth County last weekend. A moving blanket on the roof of my vehicle. Then a piece of plywood. Then my tripod. This gets my lens up to about 10ft off the ground. Handy for shooting tall objects. However it gets a bit tricky when you’re in the middle of 50km wind gusts blowing across endless corn fields! 😉📷

SNEAK PEEK - ON LOCATION!
Photo trip to the Perth County area in search of my ancestral roots and the historic farm silos of this verdant land. Ok this one is from the car with my iPhone, but there’s more goodies coming from inside the Nikon once I’m back in the home studio. 😉📷

Always nice to see my work in situ.

I feel the greatest joy when I see my work printed, framed, and hanging on a wall. It’s an amazing process from standing in a field and capturing an image that I think might be appealing, then get back to the studio to have a look and realize you’re excited by what you see, so you send it off to be printed (thank you as always ) and then you have this tangible, tactile print in your hands to inspect and critique. And there’s that magical moment when you decide it’s worth framing and putting on view for all to see.

Add a gorgeous flower arrangement and the moment is sublime. 😉

My second image “Sugar. Sugar” is for sale in the booth #1013. Final day on Sunday from Noon-6pm. Buy art. Be happy!

This photo reflects one of the conveyor belts at the Redpath Sugar factory on Queen’s Quay, Toronto. I love this commercial space. The “sweetness” of industry living with humanity on our waterfront.

“Nice Set of Pipes”
2020
39”W x 18.5”H

These pipes drop down the Escarpment and tunnel into a 1915 hydro electric plant where the water they carry (from Lake Eugenia) powers the turbines to generate electricity for the Beaver Valley.

To my eye, they’re still a nice set of 107 year old pipes. 😉

Artists Statement / Biography

David Brandy is an award-winning contemporary fine art photographer.

Brandy captures transient moments that reflect the concept of “The Uncanny” (Das Unheimliche). The uncanny is the psychological experience of something as strangely familiar. It may describe incidents where a familiar thing or event is encountered or seen in an unsettling context.

The uncanny locates the strangeness in the ordinary. So too does Brandy's art – evoking a sense of being both beautiful and strange. His photographs of familiar objects or places reflect a splendour that we seldom notice while living in a hectic world filled with distraction. Hence his artistic mantra; beauty can be strange and the strange can be beautiful.

Brandy began his creative career with a BA in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson University. His practice has evolved from radio copywriter and producer, to Founder and Creative Director of a live events agency, to photographic storyteller.
