🌋 Arenal Volcano never fails to take our breath away. Did you know that from 1968 to 2010 Arenal was in a state of eruption, earning it 10th place as one of the longest durations of volcanic eruptions recorded! It’s also listed as one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world!

Arenal Volcano has been dormant since 2010. While it’s not predicted to erupt again anytime soon, it does still have the potential to do so, which means it's too dangerous to hike up to the top. However, the area surrounding the volcano is more than safe, and provides breathtaking views of this stunning natural feature. Sometimes hikers can even catch a glimpse of wisps of smoke escaping from the volcano's crater.

We love exploring Arenal Volcano National park- but the volcano is only one of the many exciting things to do while you’re in this area!

It’s brown pelican nesting season! Beginning in March and lasting through April, you’ll see brown pelicans building their nests on offshore islands where their babies are protected from major predators.

We adore these birds and love spotting their fledglings during our Island Sea Kayaking Excursions in the Puntarenas province!

Eggs take about a month to incubate, so we expect baby pelican sightings beginning in April and lasting through June.

Preferring coastal and estuary habitats, you’ll often see them roosting in large groups. Their fledglings have white, fluffy down, making them easy to spot amongst the treetops.

You can see brown pelicans on both of Costa Rica’s coasts, but they’re more prolific in the western Pacific region.

We often spot them while kayaking around the Reserva Biologica Guayabo, a series of islands in the Gulf of Nicoya that are designated seabird nesting sites. Our favorite islands to view brown pelicans in this region are Isla Cedros, Isla Jesusita, Isla Gitana, and Isla Aves.

We’re excited for this nesting season to get underway, and hope we spot lots of fluffy babies during our next sea kayaking trip in Puntarenas!

Great News! Last month Costa Rica announced a ban on Hammerhead shark fishing, a win for eco-activists and environmentalists across the country!

Three types of hammerhead shark, the smooth hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead, and great hammerhead are now protected from hunting activity, increasing safeguards for these critically endangered species.

One of our favorite ecotourism hubs for biodiversity, Golfo Dulce, was established as a hammerhead shark breeding sanctuary in 2018, which has been helping to begin repopulation efforts.

We hope that with these latest protections in place the population of these incredible animals can steadily increase and get closer to previous levels.

This couldn’t have been possible without the amazing eco activists and passionate public who have called for increased regulations on hammerhead shark fishing. We feel very lucky to live in a country whose population cares so much about protecting the beauty and health of Costa Rica’s environment!

Each act of environmental protection and policy gets us that much closer to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. We celebrate this news and look forward to more ecologically friendly policies to come.

Costa Rica has some amazing coffee tours!

Our country produces over 1 Million bags of Coffee every year - but did you know it’s actually illegal to produce low quality coffee beans here? It’s true! In 1989 a law was passed prohibiting the production of low quality coffee beans, meaning only the absolute highest quality, 100% Arabica beans are allowed to be grown for commercial production.

While Arabica coffee beans are harder to grow than their studier relatives, they produce (in our opinion) some of the richest, tastiest coffee in the world! YUM!

Those looking for a large-scale coffee tour can visit the Doka Estate Coffee Tour in the Alajuela province.

For a more personal, “mom-and-pop” experience, the espiritu_santo_coffee_tour in Naranjo is dear to our hearts.

Toward the middle of the country you’ll find the Golden Bean Coffee Tour tour, a charming stop for those traveling between Limon and San Jose.

Or you can discover a community owned coffee mill at Coopedota Coffee Tour! One of the largest producers of coffee in the region with over 900 producers associated with the co-op, you’ll see first hand each step of coffee production from plant to cup, and get to taste a variety of coffee presentations in their cafeteria.

Costa Rica has some incredible sea kayaking opportunities on both coasts, but one of our favorite areas to explore is the Gulf of Nicoya and all the amazing islands that are dotted throughout its waters.

There are many islands in the Gulf of Nicoya you can explore, but we have our top 5 favorites that we love to bring our adventurers to.

🏝️ Isla Jesusita: Offers camping on the northern part of the island and a bioluminescent bay you can explore. Kayak with the stars above and below you in one of the few places in the world you can see bioluminescence year round!

🏝️ Isla Cedros: Part of the Reserva Biologica Guayabo, a nesting site for brown pelicans and seabirds. Bring your binoculars to spot baby birds taking flight between March-April.

🏝️ Isla San Lucas: Stretch your legs and visit the old prison Carcel San Lucas or explore the hiking trails in the national park.

🏝️ Isla Chira: Discover the biggest island in the Gulf of Nicoya by visiting the Women’s Association of Chira Island, a women run ecotourism project focused on female empowerment.

🏝️ Isla Tortuga: One of our favorites for snorkeling! Bring your snorkeling gear on your kayak and get face to face with sea turtles and tropical fish before having lunch on one of Tortuga’s beautiful sandy beaches.

Read on to learn about Costa Rica’s seasons 👇🏼 While there are two main seasons in Costa Rica - the wet and the dry season- the periods of transition between these seasons also offer unique travel options. In January the dry season is in full swing, lasting until April. This is the most popular time for Costa Rican travel as the sun provides endless opportunities for adventures. Wildlife booms and quetzal nesting season begins as animals enjoy the nice weather and abundant food. May and June mark a transition period into the wet season, but still provide plenty of options for travel. These months are fantastic in the southern Caribbean, which experiences its own dry season at this time, and also hosts another dry season in September and October. The rainy season begins in late June or early July and peaks in September and October. Travel usually drops during this time, but that means costs do as well! This time is great for travelers on a budget. Another budget friendly period is November and the start of December. November can be unpredictable, some years soaked by rain and others offering beautiful sunshine especially at the end of the month. While transition and dry seasons can be sun soaked, Costa Rica is still tropical, so always pack a rain jacket (and some water shoes!).
