A New Years Story...I was inspired by the New Year to write this, a few days late but oh well. Many years ago and for many years I would celebrate the New Year at Rio Nexpa a ranch on a beach in Michoacán, Mexico. For those of you not familiar with that part of Mexico it is on mainland Mexico about an 8 hour or so drive south of Puert...o Vallarta. I started living and surfing there in the early 80’s then moved to Cancun in 1984. Back in the early 90’s there about 20 to 30 surfers that showed to surf and also spend New Year’s there. One year things got a little out of hand and we almost burnt down the entire village there were about 40 or so palapa huts on the beach at that time. Everyone started to party in the afternoon tequila and beers were pretty common amongst the traveling surfers. The locals typically drank tequila and beer but also had a special punch for the new year that’s ingredients included an assortment of fruits and to top it off as a tradition and to add a kick to the punch the locals would go to a local pharmacy and buy denaturized alcohol it came in a plastic bottle for about fifty cents, the locals would add a bottle or so of this to the punch to add a somewhat hallucinogenic nature to the punch. I just looked up denaturized alcohol and here is what it said. Despite its poisonous nature, denatured alcohol is sometimes consumed as a surrogate alcohol which can result in blindness or death. Wow I didn’t realize it was that strong or harmful.
As it got later in the evening the punch was unveiled and people stated to drink it most of the traveling surfers wouldn’t drink it but all of the locals and the diehard surfers, myself included could not puss out on downing the local macho cowboy drink. After a few hours of drinking we all went down to a bonfire on the beach by the water’s edge. One locals had a small palapa hut down on the beach and he decided he wanted to see what it would be like to have a bigger bonfire so he proceeded to light the hut on fire, the hut was in a somewhat isolated spot away from the other huts so it wasn’t too much of a danger to the other huts. The fire burned for about 15 minutes or so and I’m sure you could see it from miles around. After that we went back up to the house to get some more punch and keep the party of about 20 to 30 people going.
There was a wild Texan named Harpoon Barry (RIP), Barry was an ex-Vietnam vet that lost his leg in the war, he was tattooed from head to toe and had 2 ni**le piercings considering today’s standards not to unusual but back then in the early 90’s he stood out in a crowd, I almost forgot to include he would also surf and he was good at it considering he only had one good leg the other was prosthetic. Barry decided he wanted to see some fireworks so he went to his truck and pulled out a flare gun and started to shoot it off into the sky, he shot it off once and it did look cool especially after 5 or 6 glasses of jungle juice it looked unreal. Barry loaded the flare gun and took another shot into the sky but didn’t realize he had aimed it over the palapa huts, the flare went up and came directly down on a palapa hut and within seconds the roof of the hut was on fire, the owner of the hut was an old man named Gilberto he was around 80 years old or so. Well the owner hears all the commotion and comes running and yelling in just his underwear out from his house yelling crazy gringos your burning down my huts, at that time we all came running down to see if we could put out the fire and as it turns out a friend of mine his name was Joel was staying in that hut, well he started to freak out because he had all his surfboards, clothes and basically everything he owned in that hut. We all frantically threw sand on the fire to get it out but it only got bigger. Imagine 20 drunk off their asses surfers trying to put out a fire with only beach sand, well long and behold it worked by some miracle the fire went out and old man Gilberto only lost half of the hut’s roof. Had the fire gotten completely out of control his 20 or more huts would have all burnt down. After all that drama we continued to party all night long until the sun came up in the mountains behind us. After that I remember waking up in an old camper, not knowing where I was or what had happened and to top it off I lost the feeling in one of my hands which took about 2 days to get the feeling back. Today I look back on all that youth induced craziness and think how lucky I was to have survived. BTW today I only use denaturalized alcohol to clean my cuts and rocket fuel for my jet, drinking it is out of the question. Enjoy the new year and thanks for reading!See More
