In 1756, when Daniel's brother, Israel, was gravely ill with tuberculosis, he was transported by Daniel and his mother to Bethabara to the only doctor around. To see a different doctor would have required a trip of hundreds of miles.
After the Moravians arrived in Wachovia, they began the construction of their first town, called Bethabara. This town would grow and thrive until it hit its peak in 1766 and the town of Salem became the major trade center in the area.
Thanks to archaeology efforts, the foundations of the original settlement can still be seen today. With this new interactive map as your guide, you can travel back to 18th century Bethabara to see what it was like when it was a bustling town. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=5792daa3531e42c3a38004a317295e9b
