Is this virus a curse or a blessing?

Whenever you visit Iceland, you definitely have to try their native Icelandic Sheep Head Meal! Now I feel we have the spirit of a true Viking. Throughout history, sheep have been intrinsically linked to survival in Iceland. They provide Icelanders with fluffy wool for their famous lopapeysur, as well as tasty meat for soup and other traditional dishes—such as svíð—half of a singed sheep’s head—which can be bought in many places throughout the island, including the Mýrin cafeteria at the BSÍ bus terminal.

Back in less bountiful times, Icelandic peasants couldn’t let anything go to waste. So when a sheep was slaughtered, its head would sooner or later end up on the dining table, split down the middle with one eye peering up from the plate.

This dish, known as svið, still exists today. Icelandic cooks take a sheep’s head, cut it in half, remove the brain, singe the outside to remove the fur, then boil the head for an hour or more. It’s then served with mashed turnips or mashed potatoes.

The head offers a unique amalgam of textures and flavors. The cheek is the meatiest piece, with the typical taste and texture of mutton. The tongue provides a nice chunk of muscle, and the eyeball delivers a succulent pop when squeezed between the teeth.

If that sounds unappetizing, then svið probably isn’t for you. If it’s the cranial presentation that’s putting you off, try sviðasulta instead.At least this svið-based head cheese won’t stare back at you.

Svið is most commonly eaten during Þorrablót, an Icelandic mid-winter festival. During the festival, a selection of traditional Icelandic food, called a Þorramatur, is laid out buffet-style for hungry revelers. Yesterday was a very tragic day yesterday. Moments I found out about Kobe Bryant's death, I learned that my Aunt Peggy also died shortly after. Both were All Stars in my life. My Aunt Peggy was always an All Star to our family and greatly cherished as Kobe was cherished through basketball and of the court.

You definitely will be missed Auntie. You were one of the strongest women I’ve ever known. I love you so much and I’m so happy I had the opportunity to catch up with you recently and we talked for an hour over the phone. I will never forget how strong of a fighter you’ve always been. You threw the best parties I’ve ever known growing up and you always had a spirit full of joy and happiness. 💔

You were the first who taught me how to zydeco at a young age. Your home was always welcomed by many! I always enjoyed our phone conversations when we caught up. You just told me your wish was to jump on a plane and come to California. I wish I could’ve helped that dream come true before you left. Tell the family in Heaven I said hello as you meet up with them in spirit. 🥰 I’m at a lost for words now. Asking for prayers and strength for my family. 🙏🏾 R.I.H. 💔

Kobe Bryant was killed Sunday in a helicopter crash, as first reported by TMZ and confirmed by Adrian Wojnarowski.
