1. Watch the sunset over the Douro river. Perfect spot with a lot of locals and a festival atmosphere: Passeio das Virtudes.
2. The Art district around Rua de Miguel Bombarda is great for some alternative shopping. Lot’s of concept stores, local designers clothing and galeries. Pictured is with great illustrations, perfect souvenirs!
3. Bike along the Douro river bank on the Vila Nova de Gaia side to Alfurada and have lunch at .afurada - great fish restaurant!

Great way to travel to Douro Valley is by train from Porto. Spectacular views along the way and the railway station of Pinhão is a beauty queen! 💙

[NEW IN THE LH COLLECTION]

I visit Malaga very regularly as our very own Spanish place under the sun, Casa Cubista, is not that far from there. But a suitable Local Hideaway I had not spotted in this Andalusian city until recently.

With this beautiful luxury city palace, this is about to change. What a beautiful place and the hotel ticks all the boxes! Perfect location, tastefully elegant rooms, a fantastic restaurant (also open to non-guests), and you start the day with a delicious breakfast. Last but definitely not least: friendly and inspired staff!

In short, the perfect place for a citybreak in lovely Malaga (I would be happy to give you my insider tips) or the start/end point of a round trip Andalusia…. This Mediterranean city is definitely not to be missed and then this fine Hideaway in the middle of the city is the place to be!

Always a pleasure to collaborate with my German besties!

Ein fantastisches Hideaway direkt im Herzen des lebhaften Stadtzentrums von Mechelen.
In einem modernen Gebäude fand Nele, die Gastgeberin, ihre neue Leidenschaft: die Führung eines Gästehauses. Nur 3 Zimmer... alle etwas anders, aber ebenso atmosphärisch mit allerlei Vintage-Funden, die Nele sorgfältig kombiniert hat, um ein gemütliches Zuhause zu schaffen.
Und dann Mechelen... was für eine tolle Stadt! So viele nette Restaurants, Geschäfte, Fachgeschäfte und wunderschöne alte Gebäude, hat sich Hals über Kopf in sie verliebt.

Für Local Hideaways fand Esther es passend, nach ein paar belgischen Hideaways abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade zu suchen. Etwas anderes als die üblichen Verdächtigen wie Antwerpen, Gent, Brüssel usw. Und so besuchte sie zwei überraschend unterhaltsame Städte: Hasselt und Mechelen. Beide sehr unterschiedlich... aber beide garantieren einen schönen (Wochenend-)Aufenthalt. Und natürlich schläft man fantastisch im richtigen Local Hideaway... was auch sonst? 😉

Just outside a picturesque small village, Paul and Fran found their Italian dream home. An old farmhouse with thick ocher-colored sandstone walls, plenty of space, surrounded by fruit trees and views of Marche’s rolling hills and high fortified villages.

The perfect Hideaway to slow down and to enjoy local Italian (rural) life. This holiday home is suitable for max. 6 persons.

It is the perfect base to discover the beautiful Marche: sleepy villages where time has stood still but where you can often find a super good and affordable restaurant or a coffee in the local pub; beautiful nature – perfect for hikers, mountain bikers or cyclists, the Adriatic coast is half an hour away – cosy beach clubs in summer and delicious fresh fish in the restaurants and the not-to-be-missed city of Ascoli Piceno.

[NEW IN THE LH COLLECTION]

The north of Italy has many well-known lakes, beautiful and very popular with holidaymakers for years… but hugely flattened. Time for a suitable alternative. Luckily, this summer I found a fairytale lake 1.5 hours’ drive from Milan where tourism is still mostly limited to Italians who have their country houses there.

And it gets even better because I visited an amazing Hideaway there where everything is right and all 20 apartments have a view of the lake.

Brothers Matteo and Gian Carlo created a true paradise here with beautiful authentic building materials and surrounded by natural beauty. The apartments are cleverly designed so that you can stay there with 2 people as well as a family, all also have a balcony or terrace and a kitchenette. But to fully enjoy your rest and holiday, there is absolutely no need to cook! In fact, you will be spoiled in the morning with a large breakfast basket filled with delicacies, you can order room service or enjoy the fantastic cooking of chef Matteo in the restaurant. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anywhere with such a beautiful view!

A hidden gem, adults only, in the lovely town of Boliqueime… this small-scale boutique hotel meets the Local Hideaways wishes. Only 7 rooms, a pittoresque courtyard where a delicious dinner is served in the summer months and brunch in the other months. Beautiful art by Meinke Flesseman (a personal fave) decorates the walls. Boliqueime is a lovely nice town in the Central Algarve with authentic restaurants/bars and a few great shops.

Hidden away on the glitzy Greek island of Spetses is this small-scale hotel…. Here you’ll find privacy and fine rooms – including family rooms – some with kitchenettes. Dimitris is a fantastic host and knows the island like the back of his hand! He is happy to share his insider tips. You can cool off and relax by the small pool, you will be spoiled with a breakfast in the morning and the old harbour and the centre are within walking distance.
