A post this Memorial Day weekend from my other page, Vintage Charlottesville. To see all my Charlottesville posts follow/like that page since that is the one I’ll keep active going forward. Thanks to all of you who have already switched over!

This photograph was taken on Memorial Day weekend, 1959, near the intersection of First & Main in downtown Charlottesville. The Jefferson Theater is screening a new release, “Pork Chop Hill”starring Gregory Peck. Another movie theater, The Lafayette, can be seen in the distance. Nearly every business along Main Street had prominent signage, often in the form of blade signs hanging out over the wide sidewalks. Later this same year Barracks Road Shopping Center would open and contribute to the long, slow decline of downtown as a major shopping area in Charlottesville.

This image is just one of many rare and remarkable photographs found in the book “Vintage Charlottesville” by Steve Trumbull and available at the link below or at Blue Whale Books and The Virginia Shop.

Holiday shopping, December 1954, Main Street, Charlottesville. Note in this photo that Miller & Rhoads hasn’t been built yet. That would happen just a couple of years later. But also note that the old building in that location seen in the cover photo of our book is gone. (Click on the link below to see the book cover.) That was the Monticello Bank building and it had been demolished earlier in 1954 to make way for Miller & Rhoads.

Many more rare and remarkable photos are included in our book “Vintage Charlottesville”, most of which have never been published or displayed anywhere else. Get your copy at the link below. Order now for free shipping and quick local delivery.

This aerial photo was taken over Scott Stadium at UVA in 1980 by the late Ed Roseberry. Throughout his career, Roseberry took hundreds of images flying over Charlottesville including some as early as the late 1940s with his brother Bob as pilot.

This street scene shows Main Street in Charlottesville over 100 years ago. Today, this location is the west end of the downtown pedestrian mall. Some of the buildings seen here still stand with the architecture identifiable to close observers. Among the businesses in this block in the current day is The Whiskey Jar.

Snow falls on Main Street in Charlottesville, 1950s. Today this area is the west end of the Downtown pedestrian mall. The view looks east. Although the businesses have all changed, many of the buildings seen in this photograph still stand and are recognizable as you stroll along the mall today.

This postcard image of the Chapel at the University of Virginia shows the stone structure in a winter scene around the turn of the 20th Century. The postcard was made by colorizing a B&W photograph, possibly taken by Rufus Holsinger, a highly regarded professional photographer of the era. The memorial services for our friend, the late Edwin S. Roseberry (also a renowned Charlottesville photographer) were held here earlier this month on December 4th.

Visitors to the UVA Chapel may have noticed the stained-glass window in the southwest corner of the chapel. It was donated by Mr. Roseberry in honor of his wife who passed away on October 11, 1978 (Ed would live another 44 years, 2 days). Both Ed and his wife, Mary Lou Sprengel, were UVA graduates and were married in this chapel not long after graduation.

RIP Ed & Mary Lou.

Today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Future professional photographer Ed Roseberry was a 16 year-old living with his family in Charlottesville, Virginia on December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Not long after he would take time out from school at the University of Virginia to serve in the Navy. His entire WWII service would be at Pearl Harbor, where this photograph of Ed was taken. His experience there as a young man connected him to Hawaii and when he retired he relocated to Honolulu. Eventually, missing Charlottesville, he returned to his hometown in 2001. Sadly, Ed passed away in October of this year. His life was celebrated by family and friends this past weekend. His legacy will live on through the photographs he took throughout his long life.

Ed’s work can be found in all of our books including “Vintage Charlottesville” which is more than 180 pages of historic images from Charlottesville from a wide range of photographers. It makes a great gift for anyone with connections to Charlottesville and UVA. Order here for quick delivery:

This parade photo was taken by Ed Roseberry on Main Street in 1970, a few years before the pedestrian mall was built. The view is looking east from the intersection of First & Main where Hamiltons' is today. Note the Jefferson Theater was showing films at the time.

This Korean War-era Navy jet (F9F Panther) was once parked at McIntire Park for kids to climb and play on. This photo was taken sometime in the 1960s. With assorted sharp edges and rusting parts, the junked aircraft was later removed. (Photo courtesy Clint Boze).

Update: our latest book, Vintage Charlottesville, has another photo of this plane taken in the late 1960s.

It was 64 years ago that scenes from the epic motion picture "Giant" were filmed in Keswick, VA, east of Charlottesville. A train depot near Keswick Hall was used in the film and movie stars Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson were on location. Photographer Ed Roseberry, then 29 years old, managed to be on the set and took this candid shot of Taylor and Hudson chatting between takes.

More vintage photographs from Mr. Roseberry’s archive can be found in our books, including a new one coming soon. Thanks to all of you who support C’ville Images by making purchases through our online shop: http://www.cvilleimages.com/the-store/

The books make great gifts for Father’s Day or any occasion. Free Shipping anywhere in the U.S. for a limited time.

This poster/farewell card was originally created a couple of years ago when we wished Ed a safe journey and happy retirement as he left Charlottesville to spend time with family in California. It is just as appropriate this weekend as we all say a tearful good-bye to our friend and colleague, the legendary Charlottesville photographer Edwin S. Roseberry. He will be greatly missed. This art work was done by my good friend and creative partner at C’ville Images, Steve Haske who is the artistic force behind much of my work.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague Edwin S. Roseberry this morning in California. The legendary photographer enjoyed a long career here in Charlottesville and at UVA and is fondly remembered by family, friends, and fans of his impressive body of photographic work. We will share more info as we receive it from the family and will continue to share images and highlights from Ed’s phenomenal archive and career on this page. Ed was 97.

Rest in peace, Ed. We love you!
