siness owners would prefer to spend their time running their businesses, without the hassle of being tied to their books. Thirty years ago my husband and I opened a fast-paced retail business. (We have since sold it.) We enjoyed being self-employed and learned a lot. We used that knowledge to help other small business owners with their businesses through consulting and bookkeeping services. Basic principles remain the same, but the learning curve never stops as we adapt to the latest business trends and technology. A business owner can’t expect to know all the answers, but they can align themselves with experts who do. That’s true for your business and that’s true for my business. Some businesses prefer to have an in-house bookkeeper, but there are costs associated with an employee even if you hired them at an entry level wage. You must pay Social Security and Medicare tax for that employee as well as any other benefits your company pays for. You must provide them with a desk, computer, software, office supplies etc. You must give them sick days and vacation and arrange for someone else to do their work when they’re gone. You must remember their birthday, put up with their spouse and buy Girl Scout cookies from their kid…. Seriously, my point is the bookkeeping has to get done and it can be contracted out for a fraction of the price you would invest in an employee. If you hire a bookkeeping company you never have to worry about sick days, vacations or turn over. The prevailing method of setting bookkeeping charges is a fixed fee based on the amount of transactions a business produces per month. The cost to the business owner remains the same every month but is based on those transactions so if the number grows dramatically; the monthly estimate will have to be adjusted. When calculating the cost per transaction, it’s imperative to know how long a transaction takes to enter and not all transactions are created equal. In other words, estimating is an art form. It requires patience and adjusting and adaptability but in the end fairness is always the goal. I want my clients to be happy with the services they’re receiving, the price they’re paying and my bookkeepers to be paid the professional wage they deserve. My goal with Cloud Z Bookkeeping is to provide a valuable service for small businesses in exchange for a fair wage. If there’s one word I want associated with our company; it’s fair. I do not dream of wealth and glory, but freedom and independence. I’m not weighing stock options, I’m making mortgage payments. Greed has no place in my company. I’m a firm believer that a playful, creative and innovative work atmosphere is the key to any thriving, successful company. In other words, I try not to take myself too seriously.
